Charlotte’s Oldest Restaurant Just Announced Plans To Close Their Doors For Good

Green’s Lunch, the oldest still operating restaurant in Charlotte, has just announced plans to close their doors for their last time on Wednesday, June 28.

This will mark the end of their 97-year legacy of serving some of the best hot dogs in Uptown Charlotte.

The property at the intersection of W 4th Street and S Mint Street was first listed for sale for $3 million in December 2022, and sadly, they’ve now found a buyer for the historic location (specific details have not yet been disclosed).

When Green’s Lunch first started its business in 1926, Charlotte’s population was significantly smaller than it is today, with fewer than 100,000 inhabitants. At that time, it was locked in competition with Winston-Salem for the title of North Carolina’s largest city, based on U.S. Census data.

Over its near-century-long presence, Green’s Lunch has been a silent observer to Charlotte’s remarkable transformation. It has witnessed the birth of towering skyscrapers that now dominate the Uptown skyline, and watched as Charlotte evolved from a mid-sized city to the 15th largest city in the United States, boasting a population of nearly 900,000 residents.
