What does a “comfortable” salary look like in Charlotte?
As a result of inflation, salaries are not stretching as far as they used to. However, the income needed to feel financially stable varies dramatically across America’s largest cities.
With this in mind, SmartAsset crunched the numbers to reveal the post-tax income needed for an individual (with no children) to live comfortably in the 25 largest metropolitan areas.
To do so, we defined a “comfortable lifestyle” using the 50/30/20 budgeting rule, which sets aside:
  • 50% of after-tax income to basic living expenses (needs)
  • 30% to discretionary spending (wants)
  • 20% for savings or debt payments.

Charlotte came in at #21 out of the top 25 biggest cities in America, proving we are still a pretty affordable city overall.
