Historical places in Charlotte

Charlotte has a rich history that dates back to 1768 when it was founded by Thomas Polk. The city grew as an agricultural and trading centre due to its location on the Catawba River and proximity to gold mines in nearby Cabarrus County (home of Reed Gold Mine). There are many historical sites around town including Historic Latta Plantation (built around 1785); the Historic Rosedale Plantation; and the President James K Polk House Museum, which was built in 1815.
