Charlotte Douglas Planning High-Speed People Mover to Light Rail Station

Getting to Charlotte Douglas International Airport may soon look dramatically different. Airport leaders unveiled plans this week for a high-speed “people mover” connecting the terminal area with a future light rail station about one mile away.

Charlotte Douglas presented the specifics for the proposed system, which would connect the airport with the planned Lynx Silver Line station on Wilkinson Blvd, at this week’s MPTA Business Meeting.

CATS plans to place the nearest Silver Line station between Wilkinson Boulevard and Interstate 85, but it would still be about a mile from the terminal.

The proposed people mover would bridge that gap – moving at an average speed of 20 mph and make five stops through airport parking areas. The full trip would take approximately seven minutes.

Airport officials are considering either an automated elevated train or self-driving buses for the system. The airport’s proposed timeline would have the poeple mover first open sometime in 2032.
