What Food Should I Bring Back from Italy?

0

Italy is a country rich in history and culture. However, there’s more that makes it the ideal travel destination. There’s a wide selection of delicious, exclusive, and traditional foods from Italy.

Some of your favorite meals are originally Italian cuisine, such as pizza, arancini, lasagna, truffles, and more. While you can’t pack an entire pizza in your bag, you can take some of the ingredients home with you.

Best Food Souvenirs

After a visit to Italy, you can take many exceptional food souvenirs back with you. Whether you’re a foodie, a gourmet chef, or simply love a good snack, below you’ll find food from Italy that’s easy to travel with.

However, if you haven’t had the chance to bring food from Italy, visit the site Sweetalyfood.com. You can purchase authentic Italian ingredients from the US. The available ingredients include many of those we’re recommending here as food souvenirs.

  • Olive Oil: No country makes olive oil like Italy does. Olives vary from region to region, so a wide variety of exceptional olive oils are available. Each provides a unique taste that’s ideal for roasting vegetables or cooking other food from Italy
  • Dried Pasta: Italy is famous for its pasta, and now you can enjoy it even when you’re away from the country. Dried pasta is light and easy to transport, and there’s a large selection available. Enjoy various types, from Lasagna and Tagliatelle to Cavatelli and Trofie, as you visit different parts of Italy
  • Balsamic Vinegar: Italian balsamic vinegar is ideal for making a bread platter or as a starter for your main course. There’s something delicious about pairing it with authentic olive oil and dipping your bread in it
  • Taralli: If you love crackers, then Taralli is a must. It’s a small, ring-shaped cracker made using herbs, spices, and olive oil. You don’t often see authentic Tarelli in the US, and it’s the perfect savory or sweet snack, depending on which you get
  • Cheese: Italy is also known for its cheeses. You can get regional cheeses from each place you visit. Enjoy favorites like Pecorino, Parmesan, Fontina, and Scamorza. Many more types of cheese are available in the country than you would get in your usual grocery store
  • Dried or Canned Items: Any dried or canned item is easy to travel with and will last for a while. You can get sugo all’aglione, a garlic tomato sauce, or giardiniera, which is a relish of pickled vegetables. These allow you to make your favorite Italian dishes in your own kitchen
  • Bottarga: If you like dried fish, then Bottarga will blow your mind. It’s a product made from the salted and dried roe of local tuna, which makes a delicious topping. You grate this fish over pasta, rice, or even beans as you would with parmesan
  • Truffles: A key ingredient in Italian cuisine, truffles are also an excellent souvenir for friends and family. You can bring back truffles as pâté or preserve them in cans, jars, or oils. Truffles are a high-class gift and are delicious with various dishes, such as risotto
  • Regional Cookies: Italy has a wide assortment of cookies. Like many other traditional foods from Italy, each region has a unique type. Baci di Dama (two sides of a hazelnut cookie glued together with chocolate hazelnut cream) and Savoiardi (Italian lady fingers) are excellent choices. However, there are dozens of types to choose from, and they make perfect souvenirs
  • Torrone: If you love nougat, you’re in for a treat at the local markets. Mounds of nougat made from honey and a variety of nuts are available. They’re also much better than any you get at supermarkets. It’s another ideal gift or souvenir, as many people love this treat
  • Chocolate: Italian chocolate’s rich and decadent taste is the stuff of dreams. By taking some back, you can make it a reality. There are iconic brands unique to the country, such as Pocket Coffee, Modica, and Perugina, that are ideal for Valentine’s Day
  • Coffee: If you need that extra boost in the morning to get you started, then Italy’s coffee will provide it. Not only does coffee, such as Lavazza Qualità Oro and Illy Classico, provide a boost, but it’s also a treat on your tastebuds

Customs Considerations

Many people don’t realize that U.S. Customs allows them to bring food from Italy back home with them. While there are some customs restrictions, you can bring the above items to your baggage. However, for the following ones, be aware of these limitations so you don’t get stopped at customs:

  • Pasta: You can only travel with dried pasta, not fresh pasta
  • Cheese: Fresh cheeses like Ricotta or Mozzarella aren’t allowed
  • Dried or Canned Items: Canned meat sauces can be a hit or miss. Before traveling with a meat-based sauce, checking the most recent customs regulations is important
  • Bottarga: To be allowed through customs, this product must be vacuum-packed and sealed
  • Truffles: You can’t travel with fresh truffles, so you’ll have to buy the preserved ones or preserve them before traveling

Prohibited Food

US customs specifically prohibit some foods. Note that the following foods will never be allowed across the borders unless we state otherwise below:

  • Meats (even when cured)
  • Any meat-related product (such as soup mixes or bouillon)
  • Rice (Customs advises to avoid bringing rice, but it’s not outright banned like meats)
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables (This is a slightly gray area and depends on the specific item

Tips on Packaging Food Items

When traveling with food, you want to package it correctly. Often, the best choice is to vacuum pack it. However, ensure that if customs have any questions, you can easily show them the products. Declare any items that regulations require declared, and always try to pack food items in your check-in luggage.

A Taste of Italy in the USA

When your trip to Italy is over, you don’t have to give up all of the delicacies you enjoyed in the country. Bring back some of the best foods and cook your favorite dishes using authentic ingredients.

UNC Charlotte Joins Other Campuses In Setting Up Tent Camp in Protest Of Israel-Gaza War

Students at UNC Charlotte set up their own protest camp against the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, joining hundreds of other campuses across the country.

The students are advocating for Charlotte University and the broader UNC system to withdraw investments that support Israel.

The demonstrations have escalated tensions on some campuses, occasionally resulting in standoffs with law enforcement.

Over the past week, mass arrests have occurred at several universities, including over 120 arrests at NYU, which saw one of the first major ‘protest camps’ set up to protest the Israel-Gaza war.

This wave of arrests seems to have only amplified the message as an increasing number of schools have been setting up protest camps this week across the country.

Charlotte Opportunity Hub Launches Inaugural $4.45 Million Giveaway

0

The City of Charlotte’s Corridors of Opportunity is launching the $4.45 million Business Opportunity Hub grant cohort which tasks recipients with creating a space to connect small business owners, entrepreneurs and residents to financial assistance, access to capital and job opportunities. One of the best kept secrets and closest partners to the Corridors of Opportunity project is SchermCo, a national social-impact and implementation firm located in the heart of Charlotte. Under this program whose recipients were announced last November, the six hubs work with a facilitator to reduce barriers that underserved and underrepresented small business owners, entrepreneurs, and residents face in accessing programs and resources needed to recover, grow, stabilize, start their business or find employment.

Throughout the next three years recipients will work alongside socialpreneur, Greg Schermbeck Founder and Principal of SchermCo. The firm was tasked with the charge to create the entire playbook for the corridors of Opportunities to include writing the request for proposal, managing and organizing the review panel along with strategically planning processes for the recipients as they work to increase accessibility and visibility to directly impact upward mobility in the community.

“This has been a very dynamic and rewarding process for our team,” said Schermbeck. “We have already learned so much and are excited to further partner with the city and the six recipients. Charlotte has yet another opportunity to set the pace for cities across the country. We are honored to be a part of that footprint.”

Since 2014, SchermCo has served more than 60 social impact organizations across 18 states providing strategic planning and organizational development services that focus on family empowerment, strategic implementation, and workforce development. In 2016, the firm launched its Family Empowerment Initiative, which helps schools leverage data to determine family needs then co-create events and solutions with families in order to meet those needs. Since its inception, the firm has supported more than 18 schools in Charlotte and surrounding areas.

Panthers’ Controversial Trade Secures 1st Round Pick in Last Night’s NFL Draft

0

The 2024 NFL Draft kicked off in Detroit last night, where the Carolina Panthers did another shimmy move to secure a first round pick for the second year in a row.

Initially without a first-round selection, the Panthers traded the Buffalo Bills their first pick of the second round (#33 overall) and pick #141 for the Bills’ last pick of the first round (#32 overall) and pick #200.

This maneuver allowed the Panthers them to draft Xavier Legette, a prominent wide receiver from USC, who had a standout senior season with 71 receptions, 1,200 yards, and seven touchdowns.

Legette’s dynamic playmaking ability, which includes receiving, jet sweeps, and kick returns, adds a versatile weapon to the Panthers’ offense. His exceptional blend of size (6-foot-1, 221 pounds) and speed (4.39-second 40-yard dash) distinguishes him from other receivers and offers a fresh offensive asset to relieve pressure from quarterback Bryce Young, who is entering his second NFL season.

Renting In Charlotte For The Next Five Years Would Cost Up To $106K, Study Reveals

0

Many people are waiting to buy a home, due to high home prices and mortgage rates. But in the meantime, the total cost of rent can add up dramatically.

A new study by GOBankingRates uncovers how much renters will spend over the next five years, if prices remain stable.

To do so, their researchers analyzed February 2024 Zillow rent data (the most recent available) for the 50 largest U.S. cities. Based on today’s figures, they calculated the total cost of rent over the next five years for each city.

Their findings show five years of rent will cost Charlotte residents approximately $106K. This is among the 30 highest rent prices in the nation.

Charlotte’s rent and rental rate increase was found to be slightly higher than that of Raleigh’s, largely due to the fact that we are a much better city and more people want to live here.

Charlotte, North Carolina

  • Average monthly rent: $1,772
  • Cost of rent for next five years: $106,310
  • Cost of rent for previous five years: $93,989

Raleigh, North Carolina

  • Average monthly rent: $1,670
  • Cost of rent for next five years: $100,200
  • Cost of rent for previous five years: $89,412

The Injuries A Person May Sustain at the Workplace in Raleigh, NC

0

In Raleigh, NC, workplace injuries are a critical concern, with construction sites reporting the highest cases of workplace accidents. Despite strict safety regulations and efforts by different stakeholders to make workplaces safer, these injuries remain unpleasant realities for workers in Raleigh. The type of injuries that one can sustain and their subsequent impact vary considerably depending on the nature of the accident. With the help of a workers’ comp attorney in Raleigh, victims of workplace accidents can seek compensation from liable parties. Here are the different types of injuries a person may sustain at the workplace in Raleigh, NC.

A.) Cuts and Lacerations

The use of sharp objects, machinery, or tools is common in many workplaces, something that makes cuts a common form of workplace injury. Some cuts and lacerations injuries can be minor, while others can be severe, at times requiring emergency medical services.

B.) Musculoskeletal Injuries

These are injuries that affect joints, muscles, and bones. The most common types of injuries under this category include:

  • Joint injuries that result from repetitive movements
  • Back injuries due to heavy lifting
  • Sprains, which result from slips or falls

Although these injuries are common in the construction and manufacturing industries, they can also be prevalent in office settings. For example, slippery or unfinished floors, which are a common cause of slips or falls are a risk in any industry.

C.) Burns

Burn injuries result from having direct contact with flames, steam, harmful chemicals, or hot surfaces. Manufacturing industries and some scientific research settings where hot materials or chemicals are handled have the highest risk of burn injuries. The severity of burns depends on how hot the flame or steam is, how harmful the chemical is, or the duration of contact.

D.) Fractures

These forms of severe injuries that are more prevalent in construction and the transportation sector are a result of two types of accidents:

  • Falls
  • Accidents involving machinery or blunt force

The presence of heavy machinery and the nature of physical activities at construction sites make them the prime risk zones for fractures in a type of workplace injury.

E.) Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSIs)

Common in office settings, RSIs are a type of injury that occurs as a result of prolonged exertion of a specific part of the body or repetitive motion. For example, repetitive motions in the use of a mouse or typing, commonly lead to a condition like carpal tunnel syndrome.

F.) Head injury

Strikes by falling objects, collisions, and falls, which are common at construction sites, are the prime causes of head injuries. Head injuries range from mild concussions to severe brain injuries requiring specialized medical attention. Unlike other forms of injuries, whose impact manifests almost immediately, the impacts of head injuries sometimes manifest much later.

G.) Hearing loss

Temporary or permanent loss of hearing is a common injury among workers whose work environment exposes them to prolonged loud music while lacking appropriate hearing protection. Music and entertainment, construction, and manufacturing industries have the highest risk index of hearing loss as a form of injury.

Why do you need to understand these types of injuries?

Seeking compensation after a workplace accident is a complex process, often involving legal battles to prove the liable party’s negligence. The ability to launch a compensation claim for the injuries sustained depends on your understanding of injuries for which you are entitled to compensation. These form part of your rights and entitlements in a workplace accident case. Failure to recognize these injuries and understand your rights is a gateway to getting unfair compensation or failing to get any compensation at all when you sustain injuries at a workplace.

Conclusion

There is a wide range of injuries that a person can sustain at a workplace in different industries. The common injuries include cuts and lacerations, burns, musculoskeletal injuries, fractures, head injuries, hearing loss, and repetitive strain injuries (RSIs). Knowledge of these different types of injuries is key to seeking compensation from liable parties after a workplace accident.

Saving Farmland and Limiting Growth: South Carolina Governor Signs Land Preservation Act

0

South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster just signed into law the Working Agricultural Lands Preservation Act (South Carolina General Bill HS951), aimed at preserving family farms and curbing agricultural land loss to development.

The law establishes the Working Farmland Protection Fund that will support landowners in conserving working agricultural land through voluntary conservation easements.

According to the SC Conservation Bank, there were over 300,000 acres of farmland lost over the past 10 years due to development and urban sprawl.

Under the new law, landowners deriving at least half of their income from farmland can access matching grants for qualified projects, ensuring land remains in agricultural production. The Conservation Bank will assess eligibility based on various criteria, including landowner authority, conversion threats, soil classifications, agricultural infrastructure, economic viability, natural resource values, and community service aspects.

What do you think about the new law?
