NCDOT Asking For Public Feedback on $900 Million Independence Blvd. Project

0

North Carolina transportation leaders are seeking public input on improving traffic flow on Independence Boulevard from Uptown Charlotte to Matthews.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) will hold a meeting from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at East Mecklenburg High School Cafeteria, located at 6800 Monroe Road, Charlotte. This meeting aims to inform the public about the proposed project and gather input on the design.

The current U.S. 74 widening project includes adding an express lane and a general-purpose lane from west of Idlewild Road to I-485. This will result in one toll lane and three general-purpose lanes along Independence Boulevard. The $900 million project is projected to start in 2027.

Additionally, NCDOT proposed express lanes along U.S. 74 from I-277 to Idlewild Road, converting five miles of bus lanes into express lanes with a direct connector to Albemarle Road. If approved, this $105 million project is expected to begin in 2029.

The proposed project also includes improvements to interchanges along Independence Boulevard to ease congestion for drivers accessing the highway.

NCDOT representatives will be available at the meeting to answer questions and receive comments. Public input is crucial, and comments can be submitted at the meeting or via phone at (984) 205-6615, entering project code 1306, email, or NCDOT’s public input portal by Aug. 9, 2024.

Public feedback will help shape these plans to enhance traffic flow and reduce congestion on this busy corridor. The public can view project information at NCDOT’s public input portal.

Lake Norman Non-Profits Joining Forces To Battle Large Herds of Feral ‘Community Cats’

0

Several neighborhoods around Lake Norman are now grappling with a significant feral cat problem. A countywide effort aims to control the overpopulation of these community cats.

Community cats form colonies to survive and, if not spayed or neutered, breed prolifically. Unneutered males roam, spray territories, seek in-heat females, and fight, spreading diseases. One male cat can mate multiple times a day, leading to dozens of feral cats on a property.

During “kitten season,” from spring through autumn, Iredell County’s animal shelter and local rescues become overwhelmed. They receive numerous daily calls from people looking to surrender pets or found kittens and puppies.

Several nonprofits, including; PAR, ICAS, Lake Norman Humane, Bella Vita Animal Rescue, Citizens for Animal Welfare, and Stand for Animals are teaming up with the Iredell County Animal Services to combat the problem.

ICAS offers monthly TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) workshops to teach the public how to trap community cats. They also loan traps and have a limited number of free appointments each month for spaying or neutering the trapped animals. Afterward, the cats are returned to where they were trapped.

TNR is considered the only humane, effective, long-term solution to reducing the number of community cats.

North Carolinians now have the opportunity to win $1 million in cash with the launch of Treasure Game$’ third region.

When the concept Treasure Game$ first launched in January 2024, Ron Novak and Michelle Bush signed up, followed clues to Dallas, TX where, in March, they found their fortune. The once homeless Ron Novak is now the owner of an entire hotel, and a gorgeous Mercedes RV in which he and Michelle travel the country in quest of another Wish Lamp.

In June, a treasure hunter discovered the Wish Lamp in Colorado Springs, CO, another demonstration that the vast riches from Treasure Game$ can come quick for clue solvers sleuth enough.

“For years I’ve wanted to build a model that spreads wealth to everyday people, in a way that could exceed the Lotto. I believe it’s better for 1,000 people to win $1 million dollars each in games of skill, than one person winning $1 billion dollars in a lottery of practically impossible odds.” Said Treasure Game$ creator Dirk Gibson.

Wish Lamps have been hidden all over the USA. A lamp hidden in 10 different regions, people from across the country can play from any state. The latest Wish Lamp is hidden in Region 10, which includes North and South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. North Carolinians as young as 13 are invited to go out on these real treasure hunts and win life-altering fortunes. People can play for free, or can pay for a full access subscription.

Concord Mills is excited to announce a special back-to-school activation in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Cabarrus County.

From July 22 – Aug. 31, the mall will be hosting a donation drive to collect new and gently loved clothing for students in need this school year. Shoppers who bring in donations will receive access to the Concord Mills Savings Guide to purchase their own back-to-school essentials.

Drop offs for donations can be found at the following participating retailers within the Concord Mills mall: Lucky Brand, Aeropostale, and Nautica.

This initiative aims to support local students in our neighborhoods, so everyone feels ready to go back to the classroom. The Boys & Girls Club of Cabarrus County served over 1,500 youth last year, 61% of whom are from low-income families. By donating new and gently loved clothes, the community can help ensure that every student has the resources they need for a successful school year.

“We have 150 families that have signed up to receive meal boxes each week. The number of youths benefiting from this drive will depend on the amount of clothing received,” said Jeff Green from the Boys & Girls Club.

Plans Announced For New 6-Lane $350 Million Bridge Over The Largest Lake In The Carolinas

via SCDOT

SC’s Governor has just announced the state has secured the final funding piece to build a new mega-structure over the largest lake in the Carolinas.

I-95’s new 6-lane reinforced concrete span over Lake Marion is expected to cost a total of $350 million, with the state this week receiving $175 million in federal funding.

“The I-95 bridge project has long been a top priority in South Carolina, and once complete, it will reduce highway congestion, improve safety and enhance coastal evacuation capabilities during major hurricanes,” said Governor McMaster in a press release. “This could not have been accomplished without the work of Team South Carolina, and especially the work of Senator Graham and Congressman Clyburn, who worked tirelessly to secure this funding.”

The $175 million for South Carolina is part of a $5 billion federal investment to replace or improve aging bridges in 16 states, as announced on July 17 by the Department of Transportation. The rest of the funding includes $105 million from separate federal funds and $70 million from state funds.

The urgency of bridge repairs has increased since a cargo ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Maryland, causing a collapse that killed six workers. The I-95 bridges are vital for the East Coast supply chain. I-95 is one of the busiest interstates, carrying traffic from Maine to Florida.
