Several people were injured in a school bus crash Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Beatties Ford Road and North Hoskins Road in northwest Charlotte, according to Medic.

The crash occurred around 3:45 pm, prompting Charlotte DOT to close both inbound and outbound lanes on Beatties Ford Road as crews investigated and cleared the scene.

Long Creek Elementary Principal Kristal Tuck told families that six students and the bus driver were evaluated for minor injuries, including bumps and bruises, according to Queen City News.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools has not released additional details. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

How honest do you think Charlotte is?

A new study has determined the benchmark of the top 75 prominent cities out of 350 around the world. The study focuses on the cities with the most honest citizens, including data on car dealerships, governmental transparency, press freedom, and theft perception.

Key findings include:

  • Zurich, Tokyo, and Adelaide top the index as the most honest cities in the study.
  • Tokyo, Amsterdam and Los Angeles ranked the highest for car dealership reviews, meaning dealers in those cities received the fewest negative reviews about purchasing new and second-hand cars.
  • Zurich, Tokyo and Phoenix have the highest individual civic honesty scores from experiments which showed that residents were most likely to return a found wallet filled with money.

Charlotte ranks as 31st most honest city in the world and the 7th most honest city in America, behind San Diego (#6 in America), Seattle (#5 in America), and Louisville (#4 in America). Phoenix was ranked #1 most honest city in America.

Charlotte Surges to 14th Largest American City in Latest Census Rankings

0

Charlotte has officially become the 14th largest city in the United States, according to new U.S. Census Bureau data released today.

Between July 2023 and July 2024, Charlotte added 23,423 residents, increasing its total population to 943,476. This ranks the Queen City sixth in the nation for numeric population growth and population density, outpacing larger metros like Phoenix, Seattle, and DC.

Charlotte has grown by more than 68,000 residents since 2020 — an average of over 17,000 people per year. If that trend continues, our city is projected to surpass the 1 million mark by 2028. Currently, only 11 U.S. cities have reached that milestone.

The Census Bureau’s 2024 estimates also highlighted broader Southern growth trends. North Carolina ranked third nationally in housing unit growth at 1.9%, behind Idaho and Utah.

Several other North Carolina communities also posted significant gains. Garner ranked 10th among the nation’s fastest-growing cities over 20,000 residents with 10.4% growth. Leland placed 14th with 9.4% growth. Meanwhile, Brunswick County recorded the second-highest housing unit growth in the country at 6.4%.

Charlotte rose from the 17th largest U.S. city in 2020, passing San Francisco, Indianapolis, and most recently Columbus, Ohio. It now sits just behind Jacksonville, Florida.

Nationally, the South and West continued to dominate in growth, with New York City, Houston, and Los Angeles seeing the largest numeric increases. Princeton, Texas led all U.S. cities in growth rate at 30.6%.

CMPD Arrests Charlotte Man Who Made Viral Video of Setting A Live Opossum on Fire

0

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police have arrested 30-year-old Cameron Torrence in connection with a viral video showing an opossum being burned alive.

Torrence was charged with instigating cruelty to animals, probation violation, and fleeing arrest. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission linked the video to his Facebook account after receiving public complaints. Torrence was previously arrested in 2013 and pled guilty to two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Officials say multiple voices are heard in the footage and are investigating whether others were involved. No additional suspects have been named.

WCCB’s Morgan Fogarty has been one of the biggest advocates for the situation. Last month she made a post that received over 7,000 likes, 3,000 comments, and 2,000 shares, in which she states,

“Because this is not acceptable. These people won’t stop with this. They posted the video to their own social media accounts (sociopath doesn’t equal smart) and were loving in the attention they were getting. Posting more pictures of the animal. Making a mockery of the animal’s torture and death, promising a “funeral service” for the creature tomorrow – even putting out an address.

I made sure my contact at CMPD and NC Wildlife has that info, in case they want to send an officer.
I’m sharing this story because I believe in being a voice for the voiceless. As Morgan Rafael with the Carolina Wildlife Conservation Center said about this, “No, I can’t save this particular possum, but I can talk to the cruelty that wildlife faces…wildlife feels pain, too. No animal, no living being, deserves to be treated like this.””

Why Gatlinburg is the Ultimate Family Road Trip Destination

0

Thinking about packing up the car and hitting the road with your family? Gatlinburg should be at the top of your list. Whether you’re traveling with young kids, teenagers, or grandparents, this charming mountain town has something for everyone. You’ll find beautiful nature, exciting attractions, and fun things to do around every corner.

Gatlinburg offers the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. It’s easy to get to, packed with family-friendly activities and has a welcoming small-town feel. If you’re looking for a spot that brings smiles to everyone’s face, it’s hard to beat this special place.

Let’s dive into why Gatlinburg should be your next family road trip destination.

Stay Close to the Action: Downtown Gatlinburg

When you’re traveling with family, location matters. You want to be close to food, entertainment, and activities without needing to hop back in the car every time someone wants a snack. That’s what makes downtown Gatlinburg so special. You can park once and spend your days walking to just about everything.

For families who want convenience, comfort, and a great location, staying in condos in downtown Gatlinburg, like Laurel Inn Condominiums, is a smart choice. You get the space and privacy you need with the bonus of being steps away from Gatlinburg’s best attractions. Plus, you’ll have easy access to dining, shopping, and entertainment without the stress of long drives or heavy traffic.

One attraction you can’t miss is Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies. This world-class aquarium is located right in downtown Gatlinburg. Kids love walking through the underwater tunnel and seeing sharks, stingrays, and sea turtles glide overhead. There’s even a penguin encounter where you can meet these adorable animals up close. Families can easily spend a few hours exploring all the interactive exhibits.

Being able to walk back to your condo after a fun day at the aquarium (or after a delicious dinner downtown) makes your trip so much easier. It’s one less thing to worry about and more time to focus on making memories.

Smoky Mountain Adventures Await

No trip to Gatlinburg would be complete without exploring the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. It’s one of the best national parks in the country, and it’s free to enter, which is a huge bonus for families.

If you’re looking for easy outdoor fun, there are several kid-friendly trails. Sugarlands Valley Nature Trail is perfect for little ones because it’s flat, paved, and stroller-friendly. Older kids and parents might enjoy the Gatlinburg Trail, which runs right into the park from the edge of town. It’s an easy walk along the river with pretty scenery along the way.

You could also take a scenic drive along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. It’s a one-way loop that offers waterfalls, historic buildings, and the chance to spot some wildlife from your car. It’s a relaxing way to explore the mountains without too much hiking if your family prefers a slower pace.

Pack a picnic, take plenty of photos, and enjoy the fresh air. A little time in the Smokies has a way of making everyone in the family feel refreshed.

Family-Friendly Attractions for Every Age

One of the best things about Gatlinburg is that it offers attractions for every member of the family. No one will feel left out, no matter their age.

You’ll definitely want to visit Anakeesta Adventure Park. This mountaintop park has a little bit of everything — treehouse playgrounds, ziplines, a mountain coaster, and beautiful gardens. The Chondola ride to the top is half the fun. Once you’re there, you’ll enjoy incredible views of the Smoky Mountains.

Another great stop is Ober Mountain. In the winter, families can ski or snowboard. In the warmer months, you can try the alpine slide, go ice skating, or check out the wildlife encounter.

Don’t miss the fun seasonal events, too. From summer festivals to winter light shows, Gatlinburg keeps things exciting no matter when you visit. The variety makes it easy to plan a trip that fits your family’s interests and energy levels.

Gatlinburg makes it easy to find something that will get everyone excited, whether your family is full of thrill-seekers or you just want a peaceful day enjoying the view.

Easy Day Trips from Gatlinburg

One of the best things about staying in Gatlinburg is that you’re close to so many other great spots for quick family adventures.

If you want to see incredible views, plan a visit to Kuwohi, the highest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains. On a clear day, you can enjoy breathtaking views that stretch for miles. It’s a short drive from Gatlinburg and a favorite spot for families who want to experience the beauty of the Smokies without a long hike.

If you’re looking for even more excitement, nearby Pigeon Forge has plenty to offer. You’ll find family-friendly attractions like The Island, where kids can ride the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, play games at the arcade, and grab a bite to eat. There are also mini-golf courses, go-kart tracks, and lots of candy shops to explore.

Exploring these nearby areas adds even more fun to your trip without a long drive. You get the best of both worlds: the cozy charm of Gatlinburg and the bigger thrills nearby.

Since Gatlinburg is so central, you can explore all these places and still be back in your condo for a relaxing evening swim or a peaceful stroll downtown. Everything you need for a full and happy vacation is right at your fingertips.

Road trips are all about spending time together, finding new places, and making memories. Gatlinburg gives families the perfect setting to do just that. Between the beautiful mountains, endless attractions, and easy downtown access, it’s hard to imagine a better place for your next adventure.

If you’re ready to make some unforgettable family memories, it’s time to start planning your road trip to Gatlinburg. Pack the car, grab the snacks, and get ready for one of the best family vacations you’ll ever have. With so much to see and do, Gatlinburg promises a trip your family will be talking about for years to come.

How to Balance Relaxation and Excitement on a Family Vacation in Pigeon Forge

0

Ever come back from a family trip more tired than when you left? You take time off, plan everything, pack the car—only to return feeling drained. That’s the family travel paradox. Everyone wants fun, but not everyone defines it the same way. Some want adventure. Others want rest. Often, they want both—just not at the same time.

There’s pressure now to make vacations look perfect. But most families aren’t chasing perfection. They just want time together, a few laughs, and maybe a surprise or two. That’s where Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, shines. With the Smokies as a backdrop and a mix of nature and fun, it hits both speed and stillness. You can hike in the morning and ride coasters in the afternoon.

In this blog, we’ll share how to strike the right balance, why location matters, and how small choices can turn a chaotic week into something that actually feels like a break.

Finding the Right Mix for Your Crew

The key to a great family trip is not cramming everything in—it’s choosing the right blend. Pigeon Forge makes this easier than most places. In one morning, you can hike a quiet trail, feed ducks near a covered bridge, and by afternoon, be laughing on a mountain coaster or getting sticky fingers from fresh funnel cake.

This is the kind of town where it’s just as easy to go big as it is to slow down. And that flexibility helps families stay connected without getting overwhelmed. One example? A stop at Goats on the Roof. It’s quirky in all the right ways and checks a lot of boxes. Kids can feed actual goats living on the rooftop of a shop. Parents can browse for fun souvenirs or sample homemade fudge. And everyone can ride the Goat Coaster—a gravity-powered thrill ride that lets you control the speed. There’s even gem mining on-site, which somehow manages to entertain toddlers and teens alike.

It’s the kind of place that’s full of charm without being exhausting. No long lines. No confusing maps. Just pure, old-school fun mixed with just enough weird to be memorable. And the best part? It fits neatly between more active attractions and the slower parts of your day.

Choosing a Place to Stay That Works for Everyone

Where you stay can shape the entire feel of the trip. It’s not just a place to sleep—it’s where your family resets. That’s why the right accommodations can make the difference between chaos and calm.

In a destination like Pigeon Forge, having your own space is a game-changer. One recommendation is Heritage Cabin Rentals. These cabins offer the peace of the Great Smoky Mountains with the convenience of being close to town. You get privacy, comfort, and room to spread out. Parents can sip coffee on the porch. Kids can explore safely nearby. Everyone gets their own corner to unwind.

Cabins offer a sense of home without the distractions of daily life. You can cook a simple meal, play board games in the evening, and fall asleep to the sound of the woods instead of hallway noise. Best of all, you’re close enough to everything—but far enough to breathe.

Pacing Is Everything

One of the most common mistakes in family travel is trying to maximize every hour. It sounds efficient—but it often leaves everyone burned out. Especially when you’re juggling different energy levels. One person wants to zipline. Another just wants pancakes and peace. So instead of scheduling back-to-back activities, consider anchoring each day with one thing that’s energetic and one thing that’s easy.

For example, hit a museum or do a scenic drive in the morning. Then let the afternoon breathe. That might mean hanging out by a stream, going back for a nap, or finding a playground where no one’s expected to perform. You’re still doing plenty—you’re just not sprinting.

Pigeon Forge offers a wide range of these in-between moments. From mini golf and walking trails to lazy rivers and scenic lookouts, it’s not hard to find low-effort wins. And those quiet parts? They give everyone space to recharge, which makes the exciting parts even better.

Letting the Trip Evolve

Another way to balance the highs and lows of a family vacation is to leave room for surprises. Not everything needs to be planned. Some of the best memories come from unplanned stops or spontaneous choices. A candy shop that wasn’t on your list. A roadside view that makes everyone pause. A moment of quiet when no one is on their phone.

Flexibility is underrated. You might plan to spend the afternoon at a show but end up having a better time skipping rocks by the river. Being okay with plans shifting can turn stress into opportunity. It also gives kids a chance to feel heard—especially if they get to choose part of the day.

The balance comes not just from what you do, but how you respond to what happens. If the goal is connection, then it doesn’t matter if you miss an attraction or rearrange the order of things. What matters is how everyone feels when the day winds down.

Why This Kind of Travel Matters More Now

In today’s fast-paced world, families are pulled in so many directions. School, work, notifications, and noise. Everyone’s calendar is full—even the kids’. That’s why getting away isn’t just a luxury—it’s a reset. But to truly feel the benefit, vacations can’t be more of the same. They have to give people a break from routine, not a new list of expectations to chase.

A balanced vacation, one that mixes fun and rest, gives families space to reconnect. It lets people laugh without being rushed. It gives parents a chance to enjoy, not just manage. And it shows kids that rest is valuable, too—not just rewards for doing more.

This style of travel is becoming more common because people are starting to value presence over perfection. It’s not about how much you do, but how fully you experience it. And that kind of mindset can follow you home.

All in all, a successful family vacation isn’t about checking every box. It’s about creating space—for adventure, yes, but also for stillness. The best trips leave room for both energy and ease. They give you stories to tell, but also moments of peace that don’t need any explaining.

In a place like Pigeon Forge, you don’t have to choose between fun and relaxation. You just have to decide how to fit both into the rhythm of your days. Start with one special outing. Add a quiet moment after. Stay somewhere that feels like home. And let the rest unfold.

Because when everyone feels seen, rested, and connected, that’s not just a vacation—it’s a memory that lasts.

NBA Playoff Lessons: What the Hornets Can Learn from This Year’s Contenders

0

As the 2025 NBA Playoffs take center stage across arenas nationwide, the spotlight shines on teams competing for a title—while others, like the Charlotte Hornets, watch from the outside. This postseason, filled with elite-level execution and strategic depth, offers more than just entertainment. It presents a learning opportunity for non-playoff teams. By examining what has propelled this year’s top contenders—such as defensive intensity, roster depth, coaching adaptability, and player development—the Hornets can better understand where they fall short and what must change. These insights, taken from the current playoff landscape, can inform the organization’s next steps toward building a more competitive future.

Embracing Defensive Tenacity

Defense has been a cornerstone for several playoff teams this season. The Oklahoma City Thunder, for instance, have showcased one of the most formidable defenses, leading the league in forcing turnovers and protecting the rim effectively. Their ability to disrupt opponents’ offenses has been instrumental in their playoff success.

In contrast, the Hornets have struggled defensively, often ranking near the bottom in defensive efficiency. To emulate the success of teams like the Thunder, Charlotte must prioritize defensive development. This includes investing in versatile defenders, emphasizing defensive schemes in coaching, and fostering a team culture that values defensive effort.

Building Roster Depth

Depth has proven to be a significant advantage in the playoffs. The Cleveland Cavaliers, for example, have benefited from a deep bench, with players like Ty Jerome and De’Andre Hunter making substantial contributions. This depth allows for sustained performance even when starters rest or face foul trouble.

The Hornets, however, have often relied heavily on their starting lineup, with limited contributions from the bench. To address this, Charlotte should focus on developing young talent and making strategic acquisitions to bolster their second unit. A deeper roster not only provides flexibility but also mitigates the impact of injuries and fatigue over a grueling season.

Strategic and Adaptive Coaching

Effective coaching has been a differentiator in the playoffs. The Boston Celtics, under Joe Mazzulla, have demonstrated adaptability by adjusting their offensive strategies in response to opponents’ defenses. Such strategic flexibility has been key to their postseason success.

The Hornets can take a cue from this by fostering a coaching environment that emphasizes adaptability and in-game adjustments. Encouraging a coaching philosophy that is responsive to game dynamics can lead to better performance in high-pressure situations.

Prioritizing Player Development

Player development is essential for building a competitive team. The Houston Rockets have made significant strides by focusing on developing their young core, leading to a successful playoff berth. Their commitment to nurturing talent has paid dividends on the court.

Charlotte should similarly invest in the growth of its young players. Providing ample playing time, personalized development plans, and mentorship can accelerate player progression and contribute to the team’s overall success.

Cultivating a Winning Culture

A winning culture is often the intangible factor that propels teams forward. The Minnesota Timberwolves have transformed their organizational culture, leading to improved performance and playoff success. This cultural shift emphasizes accountability, teamwork, and a relentless pursuit of excellence—traits you’d look for if you were going to bet on the NBA Finals.

For the Hornets, establishing a culture that prioritizes winning attitudes, professionalism, and continuous improvement is crucial. This involves leadership setting the tone, recognizing and rewarding positive behaviors, and creating an environment where every member is committed to the team’s goals.

Leveraging Analytics for Competitive Edge

In the modern NBA, analytics play a pivotal role in team strategy and player development. Playoff teams are increasingly utilizing data to inform decisions on player rotations, shot selection, and defensive matchups. For instance, the Boston Celtics have effectively used analytics to optimize their offensive and defensive schemes, contributing to their postseason success through detailed statistical NBA game breakdowns.

The Hornets can benefit from investing in a robust analytics department to gain insights into player performance and opponent tendencies. By embracing data-driven decision-making, Charlotte can identify areas for improvement and make informed strategic choices that enhance their competitiveness.

Enhancing Physical Conditioning and Injury Prevention

The grueling nature of the NBA season and playoffs demands peak physical conditioning and effective injury prevention strategies. Teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers have maintained player health through comprehensive conditioning programs and load management, ensuring key players are available and effective during critical playoff games.

The Hornets should prioritize the development of individualized conditioning programs and invest in medical and training staff to monitor player health. Implementing advanced recovery techniques and injury prevention protocols can help maintain player availability and performance throughout the season.

Strengthening Mental Toughness and Resilience

Mental toughness consistently sets playoff teams apart. The Houston Rockets have exemplified this by rallying from deficits and staying composed in high-pressure moments, contributing to key postseason wins.

For Charlotte, building mental resilience can begin with integrating psychological training into player development. Collaborating with sports psychologists to strengthen focus, confidence, and emotional regulation can help athletes perform more consistently under the intensity of playoff-level competition.

Moving Forward: Implementing the Lessons

The path to becoming a playoff contender is complex, demanding coordinated efforts across the entire organization. For the Charlotte Hornets, this year’s playoff teams offer a clear roadmap to follow. Strengthening defensive capabilities through targeted coaching and acquiring players with proven defensive skills is essential. Building greater roster depth by developing bench talent and pursuing versatile contributors can provide much-needed flexibility. Promoting adaptive coaching that responds to in-game dynamics will enhance strategic execution. Prioritizing player development with individualized growth plans ensures long-term progress, while cultivating a winning culture rooted in discipline, teamwork, and continuous improvement can unify the team’s identity. By implementing these strategies, the Hornets can shift from onlookers to legitimate postseason contenders in the seasons ahead.
