Hurricane Isaias Could Track Toward Charlotte This Weekend

Charlotte could find itself in the path of Tropical Storm Isaias this weekend, according to several early computer models.

The storm strengthened into Tropical Storm Isaias early Wednesday over the southern Gulf. It currently has sustained winds near 40 mph.

The National Hurricane Center expects Isaias to strengthen rapidly during the next two days. Forecasters currently expect the system to become a hurricane by Thursday. It could then approach the central Gulf Coast late Friday.

Spaghetti models show several possible tracks curving northeast through the Southeast. Some take Isaias or its remnants through the Carolinas and near the Charlotte region.

If we don’t get a direct hit – we’ll still likely get a good amount of rain. Tropical moisture should spread into North Carolina beginning Saturday afternoon. The greatest statewide rain chances arrive Saturday night through Sunday.

Central North Carolina could receive around an inch of rain under current projections. Higher totals are possible if the storm shifts farther east.
