After nearly a decade of construction and delays, I- 485’s new toll lanes are now officially open.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation joined local leaders this weekend to cut the ribbon on the long-awaited express lane project. Drivers can now begin using the lanes in both directions.
According to North Carolina Quick Pass, toll rates will vary based on vehicle length, time of day, and day of the week. Officials also expect pricing to remain dynamic during the first year.

The project was added to the 2040 Metropolitan Transportation Plan in 2014 and has been a regional priority ever since. As growth accelerated in areas like Ballantyne, traffic volumes steadily increased along the southern loop.
The new lanes now offer high-income commuters across Mecklenburg County an option for avoiding I-485 nightmarish rush hour traffic.
