These Charlotteans Will Be Competing For Olympic Gold This Week

Two local Charlotte residents (if you consider Matthews part of Charlotte) will be going for gold this week in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games in the sports of weightlifting and hurdles.

The first Charlotte athlete to compete this week will be 23-year-old Anna Cockrell in the 400-meter hurdles category of Track and Field. Anna placed second in the semi-finals today with an official time of 54.17 (the 3rd fastest time in all 3 rounds of semi-final races), she will now move on to the finals, which will air live from Tokyo on August 3rd at 10:30pm (est).

The second Charlottean (again, if you consider Matthews part of Charlotte) competing this week will be 33-year-old Caine “The Dragon” Wilkes in the Men’s Superheavyweight weightlifting category. Wilkes will be competing live from Tokyo in the Group B session on August 4th at 12:50am (est).
