The Charlotte suburb of Tega Cay is finally taking action to address the area’s deer overpopulation (now estimated to exceed 1,000 deer).

In yesterday’s city council meeting, they officially approved a plan to hire sharp shooters to eliminate 80 deer, projected to cost just over $60,000.

During the meeting, they officially added the following language to ORDINANCE 70A, SECTION 70.14.06 of the city code:

Notwithstanding any provisions to the contrary in this Section, or elsewhere in the City Code, City Council may, by majority vote, on a case-by-case basis, grant an exception for the temporary use of firearms, or firearm like devises including but not limited to air propellant guns used for darting, within the City for the management of wildlife.

Officials report that the deer population will need to be reduced by approximately 350 for effective management.

The city is also exploring the use of PZP, a contraceptive agent that prevents deer pregnancies. They are waiting on a pending approval from Clemson University before they consider implementing it within city limits.

What do you think should be done to help control the deer population in Tega Cay?
