City of Charlotte Turning Crime-Plagued Motel Complex Into Affordable Housing

The Charlotte City Council recently approved the sale of land in the West Sugar Creek Corridors of Opportunity for affordable housing development.

The property, previously home to a crime-plagued hotel, was acquired by the city in April 2023. The new sale will transfer the land to Marcus Kornegay’s Prosperity Hidden Valley, LLC, for $1.

The current property includes 5 buildings at the corner of Sugar Creek and I-85.

The development plan includes tearing down the current motel and building at least 39 affordable townhome units for families earning 80 percent or less of the Area Median Income. These units will remain affordable for 20 years, supported by programs like the House Charlotte Downpayment Assistance Program and specialized mortgage options for low- and moderate-income buyers.

This initiative aligns with the city’s strategy to revitalize the Corridors of Opportunity, addressing community feedback to reduce problematic hotels in the Sugar Creek and I-85 area.

“This project has brought attention to other underperforming hotel or motel properties. But it’s not the only way that the city is investing in the corridor, either. We have been working hand in hand with the new Sugar Creek Business Association, which is focusing on organizing the business owners within the corridor,” said Corridor Revitalization Coordinator Erin Gillespie in a press release. “We also received a large federal grant last year for the Sugar Creek mobility corridor project, which will bring a whole suite of mobility infrastructure investments to the community. So this housing project is a huge investment and a really big win. And it’s one of many ways we’re working with the community to grow the corridor.”

Charlotte FC Win Over Chicago Fire FC Secures Team’s Third Straight Shutout Victory

charlotte fc win over chicagoIn yesterday’s first midweek match of the season, Charlotte FC Head Coach Dean Smith made strategic changes to his starting eleven to land a historic Charlotte FC win. SuperDraft pick Tyger Smalls made his debut start on the wing, Joao Pedro stepped in for the injured Jere Uronen, and Junior Urso and Nikola Petkovic replaced Djibril Diani and Brandt Bronico.

The match’s crucial moment came in the 58th minute when Ashley Westwood expertly placed a penalty kick into the top corner of the net, securing a 1-0 victory for Charlotte FC against Chicago Fire FC. This win marks Charlotte FC’s third consecutive triumph in the MLS.

Charlotte FC (6-5-2) maintained their lead with the help of goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina, who made two dramatic saves in the closing minutes, achieving his third straight clean sheet. The first half ended scoreless, with both teams displaying strong defensive performances.

The decisive penalty was awarded after Chicago’s Carlos Teran fouled Charlotte’s Patrick Agyemang inside the penalty arc. Despite Chicago’s (2-7-4) persistent pressure in the second half, Kahlina successfully stopped all four of their shots on goal.

With this Charlotte FC win, the team climbs to fifth place in the MLS Eastern Conference standings, level with New York City FC in points (20) and goal differential (1), but trailing in goals scored (16-14). Charlotte FC is now just eight points behind conference leaders Inter Miami CF.

Looking ahead, Charlotte FC prepares for a home match against LA Galaxy (5-2-6). In their last encounter in May 2023, Charlotte FC secured a 1-0 win over the Galaxy.

Canales aims to develop second-year quarterback Bryce Young, the No. 1 overall pick, while Morgan has bolstered the offense by trading up for South Carolina’s play-making wide receiver Xavier Legette in this year’s draft.

The Panthers will compete against each team from the NFC East and AFC West, along with the 2023 last-place teams from the AFC North, NFC North, and NFC West. They will also face their NFC South rivals twice, both home and away, as part of their 17-game schedule. A notable game is set for Week 10 against the New York Giants at Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, on Nov. 8, where the Panthers will serve as the designated home team.

Here is the lineup of home and road opponents for the 2024 Panthers schedule:

After a tough 2023 season where the Panthers started with six straight losses, leading to the firing of Frank Reich after 11 games, Dave Canales has been tasked with turning things around. The Panthers are eager to prove themselves and make a strong statement in the 2024 season.

Which to Choose – The Camino from Portugal or Sarria?

Embarking on the Camino de Santiago is a journey filled with spiritual reflection, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural experiences. With various routes available, choosing the right one can be challenging. Two popular options are the Camino from Portugal and the Camino from Sarria. Let’s look at the highlights of both routes.

Camino from Portugal: The Coastal and Scenic Route

The Camino Portugués, starting from Portugal, is a route that appeals to those seeking a blend of coastal beauty and historical charm. This route begins in Lisbon or Porto, with the latter being a more common starting point due to its manageable distance of approximately 240 kilometers to Santiago de Compostela.

Strengths of the Camino from Portugal

  • Stunning Coastal Views: The Portuguese route, particularly the Coastal Way (Caminho da Costa), offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Pilgrims can enjoy walking along sandy beaches, through quaint fishing villages, and experiencing the refreshing sea breeze.
  • Cultural Richness: This route is steeped in Portuguese and Galician culture. Highlights include the historic cities of Porto and Pontevedra, known for their medieval architecture, vibrant markets, and delectable local cuisine.
  • Varied Landscapes: From lush forests and rolling hills to serene riverbanks and rugged coastlines, the Portuguese Camino offers diverse scenery that keeps the journey visually stimulating.

Highlights of the Camino from Portugal

  • Porto: Known for its charming old town, historic bridges, and famous port wine, Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a delightful starting point.
  • Valença and Tui: These twin border towns, one in Portugal and the other in Spain, provide a fascinating blend of cultures and impressive fortresses.
  • Santiago de Compostela: The journey culminates in this iconic city, where the awe-inspiring cathedral awaits, marking the end of a spiritual and transformative pilgrimage.

Camino from Sarria: The Traditional and Social Route

The Camino Francés from Sarria is the most popular starting point for those wishing to complete the minimum 100 kilometers required to receive the Compostela certificate. This route is ideal for those who want a shorter but equally rewarding pilgrimage experience.

Strengths of the Camino from Sarria

Accessibility and Convenience: Sarria is easily accessible by train and bus, making it a convenient starting point for pilgrims who have limited time or are new to long-distance walking.

Social Atmosphere: This section of the Camino Francés is bustling with fellow pilgrims, providing ample opportunities for camaraderie, shared stories, and forming lifelong friendships.

Highlights of the Camino from Sarria

  • Sarria: A charming town with numerous historical sites, including the 13th-century Church of Santa Mariña and the medieval bridge of Ponte Áspera.
  • Portomarín: Known for its unique church, Igrexa de San Nicolás, which was moved stone by stone to its current location during the construction of a reservoir.
  • Melide: Famous for its pulpo a la gallega (Galician octopus), Melide is a culinary highlight of the Camino.
  • Arzúa: This town offers a taste of local cheeses and a chance to relax before the final stretch to Santiago.

Choosing Your Camino

The decision between the Camino from Portugal and the Camino from Sarria depends on your personal preferences and goals. If you crave coastal scenery, cultural immersion, and a slightly longer journey, the Portuguese route is perfect. For those seeking a shorter, more social experience with historical depth, starting from Sarria is the ideal choice.
