A dangerous round of storms is expected to hit the Carolinas this afternoon, bringing possible hail, damaging winds, torrential rain and localized flooding. Multiple storm systems could affect different parts of the region simultaneously.

The main threat for the Charlotte area stretches from roughly 2 pm this afternoon through midnight.

According to the National Weather Service, damaging wind gusts and small hail will be the primary severe weather threats. Thunderstorms could dump heavy rain, triggering localized flooding and make driving dangerous.

Saturated ground could also make it easier for strong winds to bring down trees and power lines.

Residents should stay away from large trees as storms approach. During severe winds, move to an interior room away from windows.

Drivers should also avoid flooded roads and never attempt to cross water when its depth is unknown.
