The City of Belmont has just reported that an accidental discharge of about 4,480 gallons of untreated wastewater has spilled into the Catawba River basin.
The discharge occurred at one of the city’s primary gravity mains located at 200 Caldwell Farm Road. The wastewater then entered Abbey Creek and from there flowed into the Catawba River and Lake Wylie.
According to the city, the discharge “was the result of a pipe failure and debris obstruction”.
