A no-swim advisory has just been issued for Lake Norman after nearly 900 gallons of wastewater spilled. The warning affects a cove near Harborside Drive ahead of the Labor Day weekend.
Charlotte Water crews responded to the sewer overflow. The affected area is near LakeHouse Wine Bar & Grill. Officials are warning both people and pets to stay out of the water.
A damaged low-pressure sewer pipe caused the spill, according to officials. Many lakefront homes use these systems to move wastewater into larger sewer lines. Those lines eventually carry the waste to treatment plants.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services is now testing collected water samples.
Residents are advised not to swim, drink, or bathe in the water in the affected area because it may be contaminated with fecal coliform bacteria, which can pose severe health risks. Those on well water are advised to test their water using at-home test kits.
The advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms the water is safe.
