The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are working around the clock to help those hit hardest by the pandemic, but while they’ve seen increasing success in vaccine delivery, rental assistance, and help with utility payments, for some reason, they’ve not been able to connect with struggling homeowners.

Charlotte’s WCNC interviewed Erin Barbee with DreamKey Partners (manager of Mecklenburg County’s Covid assistance programs) who noted that “we’ve received over 5,000 applications for assistance with rent, but our mortgage assistance program opened on the very same day and we’ve only received under 300 applications. That’s staggering for us, because we know that the need is out there and we know that people need access to these funds.”

Barbee also noted that out of $2.5 million they have available for mortgage relief, her organization has only been able to give out $233,000 to date, and the funds will expire this coming September.

According to the DreamKey Partner’s website, a Mecklenburg County resident or family may be able to qualify for mortgage assistance if they were laid off due to Covid-19 and their income falls within the following limits:

Household Size / Income Limit

1 Person $46,800

2 Person $53,450

3 Person $60,150

4 Person $66,800

5 Person $72,150

6 Person $77,500
