Governor Cooper Declares State of Emergency Over NC Public Education System

2651

The Governor of North Carolina has just declared a State of Emergency for our public school system over several bills the Republican-controlled veto-proof NC legislature will likely soon pass. The State of Emergency specifically addresses Senate Bill 406 (Choose Your School, Choose Your Future), House Bill 17 (Elect the SBE/SPI as SBE Chair), House Bill 756 (Standards Advisory Commission), Senate Bill 49 (Parents’ Bill of Rights), and House Bill 187 (Equality in Education).

The State of Emergency proposes that the new bills would “cause public schools to lose hundreds of millions of dollars, exacerbate the state’s teacher shortage and bring political culture wars into the classrooms” (you can read the Governor office’s impact analysis of the bills here).

In a public address, the Governor said, “I’m declaring this a state of emergency because you need to know what’s happening. If you care about public schools in North Carolina, it’s time to take immediate action and tell them to stop the damage that will set back our schools for a generation”.

What do you think about the new bills and the Governor’s State of Emergency?
