The Department of Homeland Security has issued an emergency “National Terrorism Advisory System Bulletin“, urging North Carolina residents to report suspicious activity and/or threats of violence to the FBI’s Charlotte division (704) 672-6100).

Wednesday’s bulletin includes the following summary:

“The Acting Secretary of Homeland Security has issued a National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) Bulletin due to a heightened threat environment across the United States, which DHS believes will persist in the weeks following the successful Presidential Inauguration.  Information suggests that some ideologically-motivated violent extremists with objections to the exercise of governmental authority and the presidential transition, as well as other perceived grievances fueled by false narratives, could continue to mobilize to incite or commit violence.”

The bulletin goes on to say that last year, Domestic Violent Extremists (DVEs) targeted and attacked individuals and governmental buildings across our nation. The Department of Homeland Security specifically believes that DVEs were “emboldened by the January 6, 2021 breach of the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. to target elected officials and government facilities.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the following North Carolina hate groups that may contain heightened DVEs:

  • Act for America, Fayetteville
  • American Guard, statewide
  • Aryan Knights of the Invisible Empire, Ku Klux Klan, statewide
  • Asatru Folk Assembly, statewide
  • Atomwaffen Division, statewide
