Today the long-awaited $150 million Gold Line streetcar expansion through Uptown Charlotte officially began transporting passengers.

The newly expanded line now runs a total of 2.5 miles from Charlotte’s Historic West End, through the heart of Uptown, to the Elizabeth neighborhood.

According to Charlotte CityLYNX, “The CityLYNX Gold Line Streetcar will operate every 20 minutes seven days a week from 5:00am – 2:00am.” From today until January 2022, passengers will ride for free, after which point, the fair will be the same as standard bus fair.

The city will now begin working on a 3rd phase of the Gold Line, which would eventually expand the streetcar line a full 10 miles, all the way down to Eastland in the east, and Rosa Parks Place in the west.
