Charlotte Approves Funding For Futuristic $13.8 Million Pedestrian Bridge Over 277

Charlotte City Council voted to approve public grant funding from the NCDOT to build the futuristic new ‘rail trail bridge’ over I-277.

According to the Charlotte’s official Rail Trail Bridge page, “This project will provide a new bicycle and pedestrian connection over I-277 from the CATS Blue Line Stonewall Station to where the existing Rail Trail ends under the East Morehead Street bridge, north of Carson Street. The project will seamlessly provide Rail Trail users direct access to and from Center City and South End.”

The new bridge now has an overall budget of $13.8 million and according to a new statement from the city, “construction is expected to begin in 2024”.
