A major portion of I-85 northbound heading into Gastonia shut down Tuesday after police responded to what they described as an “active police traffic situation.” The closure occurred near Exit 14 at Bessemer City Road, one of the corridor’s busiest points.

Gastonia police blocked all three northbound lanes and redirected drivers onto the exit ramp as emergency vehicles filled the roadway. Officers warned that the interstate would remain “tied up for quite some time” and urged drivers to avoid the area.

Authorities have not released details about what prompted the shutdown, and it remains unclear whether anyone was injured. Police said additional information will be shared as the situation develops.

Drivers should expect significant delays through Gastonia and consider alternate routes until the interstate fully reopens.

Charlotte leaders have just approved more than $3 million in new spending to rebuild public confidence in the city’s light rail system after another stabbing near the 24th Street station this past weekend.

City Council voted unanimously Monday night to authorize a one-year, $3.4 million marketing and communications contract with the Sherry Matthews Group. The new effort aims to rebuild the public image of Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) and encourage riders to return following a series of violent incidents, including the July killing of Iryna Zarutska on the Blue Line.

The city began searching for an outside marketing firm in September, receiving 18 proposals. Staff selected Sherry Matthews Group for its experience in crisis communications, branding, digital outreach, advertising, and community engagement.

Under the official agreement, the firm will help:

• promote CATS services
• strengthen public outreach
• support crisis communication needs
• improve overall perception of safety

The city manager may renew the contract for up to three additional one-year terms with possible price adjustments.

Burgess was serving a one-to-two-year larceny sentence and has nearly 20 years of low-level felony history. He escaped wearing a white thermal shirt and dark green prison pants and may be bleeding from cuts sustained during his escape.

He is described as 5’11”, 180 pounds, with brown hair, blue eyes, a beard, and several tattoos — including “BNG” on his neck.

A stabbing near a NoDa Charlotte light rail station sent one person to the hospital this afternoon and temporarily shut down Blue Line service.

According to CMPD, officers responded around 4:50 p.m. to the 1900 block of Brevard Street near the 25th Street Station. They found a victim suffering from a stab wound and requested immediate medical assistance. Medic transported the victim to a hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition.

The Charlotte Area Transit System paused all trains at the 25th Street stop as investigators secured the area. CATS implemented a bus bridge between the CTC Station uptown and 36th Street in NoDa to maintain service during the investigation.

CMPD is asking anyone who witnessed the stabbing or has information to contact Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
