3 Carolina Spots Ranked Among Top 10 Nationally for Eating Well On a Budget

0

For many Americans, stretching a food budget can feel like a juggling act – balancing taste, nutrition, and the clock. With rising costs, it’s easy to fall back on drive-thru value menus and convenience foods. But eating well doesn’t always mean spending more. Across the country, there are cities and neighborhoods where good food is both affordable and an essential part of the local culture.

Advance America surveyed 3,024 self-proclaimed “foodies” to identify the top U.S. cities and neighborhoods where eating well and eating affordably go hand in hand.

Here are the ten locations proving that you don’t need a top salary to enjoy a top meal:

#1. Athens, Georgia
College towns know how to stretch a dollar, but Athens takes it to another level. The city’s farmers’ markets brim with fresh produce and local specialties, while independent cafés and restaurants serve up meals that are both tasty and budget-friendly. From Southern classics to creative vegetarian plates, Athens makes eating well a habit, not a splurge.

#2. Riverside, Jacksonville, Florida
Riverside is a feast for both the eyes and the appetite. Its historic streets are lined with cafés that keep menus affordable without cutting corners on flavor. The Riverside Arts Market, held beneath the Fuller Warren Bridge, overflows with fresh produce and artisanal bites. It’s a neighborhood where “good food” is as much about community as it is about the cuisine.

#3. Downtown Greenville, South Carolina
Greenville has quietly built one of the Southeast’s most celebrated food scenes — and it’s refreshingly accessible. The Saturday market draws crowds for its local produce, while the downtown district is peppered with restaurants offering creative dishes at approachable prices. Whether it’s a quick bite on Main Street or a sit-down dinner, Greenville proves you don’t need deep pockets to eat well.

#4. East Nashville, Tennessee
Trendy yet approachable, East Nashville has become a magnet for foodies who appreciate personality on their plates. The neighborhood farmers’ market offers everything from heirloom vegetables to artisanal baked goods, while its eclectic mix of restaurants caters to diners on a budget. It’s a neighborhood where eating well feels effortless.

#5. North Charleston, South Carolina
This city may be known for industry, but North Charleston’s eateries are buzzing. The farmers’ market overflows with local produce, while the city’s restaurants — from soulful Southern kitchens to global flavors — keep nutritious, affordable meals on the table. It’s proof that dining well doesn’t require a premium price tag.

#6. Downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee
Chattanooga’s revitalized downtown hums with energy, and its food scene keeps pace. The farmers’ market showcases organic produce and locally made goods, while neighborhood cafés and restaurants focus on hearty, budget-friendly meals. Whether you’re fueling up before an outdoor adventure or winding down with a casual dinner, Chattanooga keeps eating well accessible.

#7. East Austin, Texas
Food trucks, live music, and a proudly quirky vibe define East Austin. Here, affordable doesn’t mean ordinary: street-side tacos, globally inspired bowls, and artisanal snacks dominate the menus. Farmers’ markets add another layer of fresh options, making the neighborhood one of the city’s best places to eat well without emptying your wallet.

#8. Old Town Albuquerque, New Mexico
Steeped in history but forward-looking in its food, Old Town makes dining on a budget feel special. The farmers’ market offers fresh, locally grown produce, while neighborhood cafés blend traditional Southwestern flavors with modern twists. It’s a spot where character and cuisine go hand in hand — at a price that encourages repeat visits.

#9. Lancaster, Pennsylvania
Lancaster is more than Amish quilts and rolling fields — it’s also a rising culinary hub. The Central Market, one of the oldest in the country, sells fresh, local ingredients at fair prices. Around town, cafés and restaurants are serving dishes that highlight quality without inflating costs. Eating well here means enjoying both history and flavor in every bite.

#10. Downtown Asheville, North Carolina
Asheville has long been known for its mountain charm and artistic spirit, and the food scene is no exception. Farmers’ markets offer organic produce and local goods, while area restaurants emphasize wholesome meals at approachable prices. Add a dash of Appalachian culture, and Asheville serves up one of the most inviting spots for budget-conscious foodies.

Charlotte had it’s own top performer on the survey in an unlikely place:

#88. NoDa, Charlotte
NoDa—short for North Davidson—is Charlotte’s colorful arts district, with food options as lively as its murals. Seasonal local farmers markets offer fresh produce and artisanal goods, while nearby cafes and restaurants keep nutritious meals affordable. For health-minded diners, NoDa is both fun and practical.

Duke Energy to Test Emergency Sirens at Charlotte’s Two Nuclear Sites Tomorrow

0

Duke Energy will conduct a full-volume siren test on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., near its Catawba and McGuire nuclear stations.

The test includes 89 sirens around the Catawba Nuclear Station in York County, SC, and 67 sirens near McGuire in Huntersville, NC. Sirens will sound for about three minutes, possibly more in some areas.

No public action is needed, as this is a routine check of the emergency alert system. In a real emergency, the sirens would be followed by radio and TV alerts via the Emergency Alert System.

The test is coordinated with emergency officials in six counties around the Charlotte area across North and South Carolina.

Charlotte Facing Increasing Flight Delays as FAA Staff Shortages Worsen Amid Government Shutdown

0

As the federal government shutdown enters its seventh day, at least a dozen FAA facilities are experiencing staff shortages, causing nationwide air travel delays. Charlotte Douglas International Airport reported 44 flight delays so far today, according to FlightAware.

Air traffic controllers, deemed essential personnel, are required to work without pay during the shutdown. Many are reportedly calling out sick, straining already limited operations.

Yesterday in California, staffing shortages forced the Hollywood Burbank Airport control tower to temporarily close, delaying flights more than two hours.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed many controllers are struggling financially and some are considering second jobs.

Despite growing pressure, the US Senate has made no progress on a funding resolution.

Last Dairy Farm in Mecklenburg County Sold For $24.6M To Become New Sprawling Subdivision

0

A historic 200-acre farm in Huntersville has been sold to homebuilder Shea Homes for $24.625 million, Mecklenburg County records show.

TM Westmoreland & Sons Farm, the last operating dairy farm in Mecklenburg County, finalized the sale last week. The land has produced beef cattle and grains in recent years but was formerly a cotton and dairy farm for over a century.

Located near Lake Norman, the farmland was previously considered as a site for the controversial Lagoona Bay Crystal Lagoon project, which would have turned the property into a sprawling turquoise lagoon with white sandy beaches, palm trees, and other tropical features.

Specific development plans and home pricing for the new Shea Homes subdivision has not yet been announced.

New Plans For 4,400-Seat Indoor Music Venue in Uptown Next To Bank of America Stadium

0

Tepper Sports & Entertainment has proposed a new privately funded 4,400-seat indoor venue beside Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte.

The “TSE Performance Venue” would host 80 to 100 shows per year and occupy two acres of city-owned land near the stadium. The facility would be freestanding and constructed with no public money, according to Tepper’s proposal, which was reviewed today by Charlotte’s Jobs and Economic Development Committee.

Charlotte City Council is expected to vote on lease terms for the project as early as October 13.

City officials say the project supports hospitality, tourism, and tax revenue while boosting jobs and local entertainment options — all without expanding the existing Bank of America Stadium ground lease.

Bryce Young Leads Panthers Comeback in Shocking 27-24 Victory Over The Dolphins

0

The Carolina Panthers staged a dramatic comeback Sunday to beat the Miami Dolphins 27-24 at Bank of America Stadium.

After trailing 17-0 in the first half, quarterback Bryce Young found his rhythm, leading multiple key drives in the second half. With two minutes left, Young connected with tight end Mitchell Evans for a go-ahead touchdown, giving Carolina their second lead of the fourth quarter.

A defensive stop sealed the win as Patrick Jones sacked Tua Tagovailoa on third down, forcing a Dolphins punt. Carolina ran out the clock thanks to a critical pass interference call on cornerback Jack Jones.

Young’s early fumble and interception had contributed to Miami’s early lead. But two crucial fourth-down conversions—one to Jimmy Horn Jr. in the fourth quarter and another to Tet McMillan in the second—kept the Panthers alive.

Rico Dowdle’s 43-yard run and a penalty for a hip-drop tackle on Young helped fuel Carolina’s momentum. The Panthers also benefitted from a Dolphins misfire when Jaylen Waddle was left wide open on a crucial second down.

Now 2-3, the Panthers will now prepare to take on the Dallas Cowboys at home, this coming Sunday afternoon starting at 1pm at the Bank of America Stadium (tickets here).

Maxwell House Rebrands as “Maxwell Apartment” in Bold New Coffee-for-Rent Strategy

0

In an attempt to stay trendy and to keep with the changing housing dynamic in America, Maxwell House has officially rebranded as “Maxwell Apartment”. The name change honors today’s coffee drinkers—many of whom rent instead of own—and highlights the brand’s longtime commitment to value without sacrificing taste.

As part of the rebrand, Maxwell Apartment is offering a 12-month supply of coffee for under $40 exclusively on Amazon. The deal includes an official “lease” and is designed to save customers over $1,000 a year compared to buying daily café coffee.

“Two-thirds of American adults drink coffee every day,3 which can add up quickly, especially these days,” said Holly Ramsden, Head of Coffee, North America at the Kraft Heinz Company in a press release. “Maxwell House believes no one should have to go without great tasting coffee and Maxwell Apartment delivers the same delicious taste people know and love, at a value that celebrates all our fans are doing to make smart choices in their lives.”

Maxwell House serves two-thirds of American adults who drink coffee daily and aims to make quality coffee more accessible during tough economic times. This campaign is one of two launching this fall to emphasize Maxwell’s dedication to both affordable flavor and consumer-first innovation.

Charlotte’s Rental Market Still Competitive Despite a Surge in New Supply

0

Charlotte’s rental market remained tight this peak rental season, even though the metro saw one of the largest waves of new apartments in the country. For renters, the extra supply offered more listings to scroll through — but it didn’t translate into relief. With most people still choosing to stay put, newcomers continued to face crowded open houses, fast-moving listings, and limited availability.

Here’s what the data shows from the most recent Rental Competitiveness Report:

  • Apartment supply increased by 2.3% in recent months, up from 1.35% during the same period last year. But despite the influx, 62.5% of renters renewed their leases, a 1.4% uptick from last summer. This trend underscores how cautious tenants remain about moving.
  • As a result, occupancy hovered around 93%, showing that most apartments are still full and leaving little room for newcomers. This has led to ten renters competing for every vacant apartment, one more than a year ago, keeping competition stiff.
  • Units were leased in about 40 days, exactly in line with the national average, reinforcing how quickly available apartments turn over in Charlotte.
  • Altogether, Charlotte’s Rental Competitiveness Index (RCI) score reached 71.8, placing the market squarely in the competitive category.

South Carolina Pizza Joint Takes Home 1st Place in Rome’s Pizza World Cup

0

Anto’s Pizza Romana and Italian Market, located in downtown Conway, won first place for its focaccia at the prestigious Pizza World Cup in Rome last week.

The global competition draws top pizza chefs from around the world and has been known to launch winners into international stardom.

Anto’s, which opened in October 2024, has already made waves locally after earning “Best Pizza” in the Best of the Grand Strand awards earlier this year.

The Rome-based Pizza World Cup, founded by Mario and Alfredo Folliero, is one of the most respected culinary contests in the pizza industry. The competition celebrates cultural interpretations of pizza and rewards technical mastery, creativity, and tradition.

This latest win puts Conway, South Carolina on the global pizza map — all thanks to a small but ambitious shop in the heart of the Palmetto State.

2026 Dining Room Design Trends That Feel Like a Luxury Renovation

0

The dining room has evolved from a purely functional space into a sanctuary of style and sophistication. As we move into 2026, homeowners are discovering that achieving a luxury aesthetic doesn’t always require gutting the entire room.

Strategic design choices and carefully curated elements can transform your dining space into something that rivals the most expensive renovations, all while maintaining practicality and personal charm.

The Return of Organic Textures

Natural materials are making a powerful comeback in dining room design, bringing warmth and authenticity to spaces that often feel too polished. Think reclaimed wood tables with visible grain patterns, rattan chair backs, and limestone accent walls that add depth without overwhelming the senses. These organic elements create a grounded feeling that makes luxury feel approachable rather than intimidating.

The beauty of incorporating organic textures lies in their versatility and timelessness. A solid wood dining table becomes an investment piece that develops character over time, while woven pendant shades or jute area rugs soften hard surfaces and improve acoustics. These materials work harmoniously with both minimalist and maximalist design philosophies, proving their universal appeal.

Pairing different natural materials creates visual interest without relying on bold colors or patterns. Consider combining a marble-topped sideboard with wooden dining chairs and linen upholstery. The interplay of smooth and rough, cool and warm textures elevates the sensory experience of the room, making every meal feel like an occasion worth celebrating.

Updating Dining Room Lighting

Nothing transforms a dining room quite like thoughtful lighting design, and 2026 trends emphasize layered illumination that creates ambiance and drama. Statement chandeliers remain popular, but the focus has shifted toward sculptural pieces with organic forms, oversized proportions, or unexpected materials like paper, ceramic, or blown glass. These fixtures serve as functional art pieces that anchor the room’s design narrative.

Beyond the central chandelier, incorporating multiple light sources at different heights creates depth and flexibility. Wall sconces flanking a sideboard or buffet add architectural interest while providing task lighting for serving areas. Uplighting in corners or behind plants introduces soft ambient light that makes the space feel larger and more inviting during evening gatherings.

Dimmer switches have become non-negotiable in dinning setups and dining room light fixtures, allowing you to adjust the mood from bright and energetic for family breakfasts to soft and intimate for romantic dinners. Consider installing smart lighting systems that let you create preset scenes for different occasions. The ability to control light temperature and intensity transforms a single room into multiple experiential spaces.

Moody Color Palettes

While white and neutral dining rooms have dominated for years, 2026 brings a bold embrace of deeper, more saturated color schemes. Rich jewel tones like emerald green, sapphire blue, and burgundy create cocoon-like environments that feel both intimate and opulent. These colors work particularly well in dining rooms because they enhance the convivial atmosphere of shared meals.

The key to making dark colors feel luxurious rather than cave-like is balancing them with reflective surfaces and strategic lighting. Pairing navy walls with brass hardware, crystal glassware, and a statement mirror bounces light around the room and prevents it from feeling heavy. Metallic accents in gold, brass, or bronze add warmth and glamour to moody palettes.

Don’t fear commitment when selecting bold colors for your dining room. Since this space is typically used for shorter periods compared to living areas, you can embrace more dramatic choices without risking visual fatigue. Consider extending your chosen color onto the ceiling for an enveloping effect that makes the room feel intentionally designed rather than accidentally dark.

Artisan-Crafted Details

Mass-produced furnishings are being replaced by handcrafted pieces that tell stories and showcase human skill. Whether it’s hand-thrown ceramic dinnerware, a custom-built dining table by a local woodworker, or chairs upholstered in fabric from independent textile artists, these artisan elements add soul and distinction to dining spaces. They represent a rejection of disposable design culture in favor of lasting quality.

Investing in artisan pieces doesn’t mean furnishing the entire room with custom items. Strategic placement of one or two handcrafted elements among more accessible pieces creates an elevated aesthetic without breaking the budget. A handwoven table runner or hand-painted serving platter can transform the entire tablescape, making even simple meals feel special.

The beauty of artisan details extends beyond aesthetics into sustainability and ethical consumption. Supporting independent makers means investing in pieces made with care, quality materials, and fair labor practices. This conscious approach to design aligns with broader luxury values that prioritize authenticity, longevity, and meaningful consumption over fleeting trends.

Flexible Dining Configurations

Modern life demands versatility, and 2026 dining rooms reflect this with adaptable layouts that serve multiple functions. Extendable tables that accommodate intimate dinners or large gatherings, modular seating arrangements, and furniture on casters that can be repositioned easily make the dining room work harder. This flexibility is the ultimate luxury in homes where space comes at a premium.

Creating zones within the dining room adds functionality without sacrificing style. A bar cart or beverage station in one corner, a small desk area for homework or laptop work in another, transforms the room from single-use to multi-purpose. These designated areas maintain the room’s primary dining function while acknowledging how people actually live and use their homes.

The Finishing Touch

Transforming your dining room into a space that feels professionally renovated comes down to thoughtful curation rather than expensive overhauls.

By embracing organic materials, sculptural furniture, sophisticated lighting, bold colors, artisan craftsmanship, and flexible layouts, you create a room that reflects both current design sensibilities and timeless luxury principles.
