A refrigerator is a key part of most fitted kitchens, but when it breaks down or stops working properly, we’re faced with a potentially expensive decision. Do we call someone in, hoping they can repair it, or start shopping for a replacement?
Before you start browsing for a new refrigerator, call us. A warm refrigerator compartment can be the result of a specific airflow problem or an issue with the door seal. Letting us diagnose and fix the issue could save you money and time, just as it did when Prime Appliance Repair made a service visit in Charlotte.
We found two issues with the customer’s GE Monogram refrigerator, which was not cooling properly, and managed to fix both problems on one visit.
Problem 1: The Refrigerator Damper Was Clicking
The fresh-food compartment was warm, and during our inspection, we noticed the damper in the lower area of this refrigerator clicked. That noise led us to investigate the damper first, and we found it wasn’t opening.
On this particular appliance, the damper controls the passage of cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator compartment. With the damper closed, the fresh-food section was not receiving the airflow it needed. We discussed our findings with the homeowner, and with their approval, replaced the damper. We checked that the replacement damper opened and closed. The clicking had stopped, and cold air began flowing into the refrigerator section again.
GE Monogram refrigerators do not all use the same cooling layout, so while a clicking damper could indicate a similar complaint on another refrigerator, it’s not a diagnosis for every refrigerator that feels warm. In this case, a clicking damper wasn’t the only problem we found, or the only reason for the warm refrigerator compartment.
Problem 2: A Folded Refrigerator Door Gasket
The door gasket is the flexible seal around the refrigerator door. When we checked the seal, we found a section folded out of position. This meant that when the door was closed, there was still a gap between the gasket and the refrigerator cabinet. That gap allowed room temperature air to enter, bringing moisture with it and allowing frost to form.
The distorted gasket was allowing warm air in
Luckily, the gasket did not need to be replaced on this visit. Our technician simply straightened the folded section, seated it back into its groove, and carefully warmed and pressed the area to restore its shape. Afterward, they checked that the door closed properly and the gap was gone.
When we find a distorted seal, we always check whether the existing gasket can make proper contact again. If it can, this saves the homeowner unnecessary expense. However, while this refrigerator door seal repair in Charlotte was achieved without a replacement part, it doesn’t mean every loose, cracked, or damaged gasket can be saved. If a seal can’t be pushed back into shape or it’s torn, then a replacement is needed.
How You Can Help Us Before a Service Visit
A description of what is going wrong and when is always helpful when you call out Prime Appliance Repair. You don’t need to remove a refrigerator panel. Just take note of whether the problem affects the fresh-food section, the freezer, or both. Mention repeated clicking or any other unusual noises, a door that will not close fully, moisture or frost inside the appliance, or a visible fold in the seal.
If you feel your refrigerator is running warm, there are some simple checks you can make before calling us out, or while you’re waiting for us to arrive.
- Look for a container, shelf, or drawer preventing the door from closing, and ensure there are no food packages covering visible air vents.
- Check the temperature. The FDA recommends keeping a refrigerator at 40°F or below. An appliance thermometer is useful, as a control setting alone doesn’t guarantee food stays cold. If refrigeration is unreliable, find alternative cold storage for your perishable food as soon as possible. Don’t wait for our visit or repair.
Remember: never force a damper, use tools behind an air vent, or apply heat to a gasket yourself. You may do more damage or put yourself in danger. Appliance repairs should always be left to the professionals.
Our After-Fix Inspection
We always ensure that any repaired or replaced part is working correctly before we leave, to reassure the homeowner and ourselves that all identified issues have been fixed. For this Charlotte appliance repair, our technician verified that the replacement damper opened and closed, confirmed that cold airflow into the fresh-food compartment had been restored, and checked the door closure and corrected gasket contact.
After damper replacement and door seal repair, the refrigerator was operating perfectly
Several days later, Prime called the customer, who reported that the refrigerator was working well and they were pleased with the result.
