A Gastonia man crashed his red sedan directly into a utility pole near the entrance to the Target shopping plaza and Chuck E. Cheese this evening. The impact damaged the pole and disrupted traffic controls at the intersection.
Gastonia Police and Gastonia Fire crews have since responded to the scene. Authorities have not yet released information about possible injuries or what caused the driver to leave the roadway.
The damaged traffic light is creating an additional hazard at the already busy intersection. Drivers should expect delays and possible closures while crews secure the area and repair the damaged equipment.
Police are asking motorists to avoid the area for the rest of Saturday night and use alternate routes.
