‘No Swim’ Advisory Issued for Lake Wylie After Raw Sewage Spill

154

A “No Swim” advisory has been issued for part of Lake Wylie after a raw sewage spill contaminated the water following heavy rainfall, prompting officials to urge residents and pet owners to stay out of water.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services said excessive rain caused a sewer overflow, releasing untreated wastewater into Lake Wylie. Crews are repairing the damaged sewer.

Residents are advised to avoid swimming or any contact with the water until further notice because bacteria levels may be unsafe.

Storm Water Services is collecting water samples, and the advisory will remain in effect until testing confirms the water is safe for recreation.
