A viral doorbell cam video showing a Shelby police officer repeatedly striking a woman during an arrest has sparked protests, widespread public outrage, and a state investigation.
The footage, which began circulating Friday, appears to show Officer Karson Hyder taking a woman identified as Cherrie Moore to the ground before repeatedly striking her while she struggles. A second officer later arrives and can be heard telling him to stop before Moore is handcuffed.
According to police, officers were responding to a suspicious person call when the confrontation occurred.
The video quickly spread across social media and led to protests outside Shelby Police Department headquarters, where residents demanded accountability.
On Saturday, city leaders announced that Hyder had been fired following an internal investigation. During a news conference, Shelby Police Chief Brad Fraser, City Manager Justin Merritt, and Mayor Stan Anthony said the department’s findings had been turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation for further review.
Moore was charged with three misdemeanors, including breaking or entering, resisting a public officer, and assault on a government official. She has since been released on bond.
Court records show Moore pleaded guilty in 2025 to resisting a public officer in a separate case that also involved Hyder.
Authorities have not announced whether criminal charges will be filed against the former officer. The SBI investigation remains ongoing.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the NC SBI at 919-662-4500.
