Charlotte Water Main Break Causes Major Traffic Chaos Amid New Water Restrictions

A major water main break flooded part of Providence Road Friday afternoon, shutting down inbound lanes during the busy evening commute.

According to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, crews responded around 4:30 p.m. near Colville Road and Beverly Drive, close to Christ Episcopal Kindergarten.

Police say inbound lanes will remain closed for an extended period while crews repair the damaged water main and repave the roadway.

The water break comes the same day Charlotte Water began Stage 2 mandatory water restrictions due to worsening drought conditions across the Carolinas.

The new restrictions ban home car washing, residential pool filling, and several other non-essential water uses.

Residents can report violations through 311, and fines now start at $100. Repeat violations can face penalties up to $600.

Authorities have not announced when Providence Road will fully reopen.
