A 74-year-old Monroe woman is now facing a murder charge after a reported “accidental shooting” quickly turned into a homicide investigation.
According to the Union County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a shots-fired call around 2:26 p.m. at a home on Winding Way.
The caller, 74-year-old Peggy Griffin, initially said she had accidentally shot her husband in the shoulder. When deputies arrived, they found the victim, Dennis Griffin, with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators say the shooting followed an argument about past events. Authorities allege Griffin retrieved a .38-caliber handgun, pointed it at her husband, and fired.
Officials also say she attempted to discard evidence before deputies arrived.
Griffin was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. She is being held without bond at the Union County Detention Center.
The investigation remains ongoing.
