Another earthquake just struck under Lake Murray, between Columbia and Charlotte yesterday afternoon at 1:55pm.

According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake had an epicenter of 34.072°N 81.245°W and a 4.0 km depth.

Last week, the US Geological Survey confirmed one of the largest earthquakes the Carolinas experienced in recent memory – a 3.0 magnitude quake struck on Thursday afternoon at 12:17 pm.

More than 100 people reported feeling the tremor within minutes. Most described brief indoor shaking with minor damage.

At 3.0 magnitude, the quake is strong enough to be felt in most communities between Columbia and Charlotte.

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we experienced the largest earthquake in over 100 years when a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Sparta, NC, and since then, dozens of aftershocks have continued to rattle our state.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

Have you felt any of the quakes?
