South Carolina Rumbles as 3.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Under Lake Murray

Another earthquake rattled the Carolinas this afternoon, this time near Lake Murray.

According to the US Geological Survey confirmed a 3.0 magnitude quake struck at 12:17 pm. Initial estimates placed the epicenter under Lake Murray due north of Lexington.

More than 100 people reported feeling the tremor within minutes. Most described brief indoor shaking with minor damage.

At 3.0 magnitude, the quake is strong enough to be felt in most communities between Columbia and Charlotte.

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. Last year, we experienced the largest earthquake in over 100 years when a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Sparta, NC, and since then, dozens of aftershocks have continued to rattle our state.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

Have you felt any of the quakes?
