Charlotte Facing Increasing Flight Delays as FAA Staff Shortages Worsen Amid Government Shutdown

As the federal government shutdown enters its seventh day, at least a dozen FAA facilities are experiencing staff shortages, causing nationwide air travel delays. Charlotte Douglas International Airport reported 44 flight delays so far today, according to FlightAware.

Air traffic controllers, deemed essential personnel, are required to work without pay during the shutdown. Many are reportedly calling out sick, straining already limited operations.

Yesterday in California, staffing shortages forced the Hollywood Burbank Airport control tower to temporarily close, delaying flights more than two hours.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed many controllers are struggling financially and some are considering second jobs.

Despite growing pressure, the US Senate has made no progress on a funding resolution.
