32-Year-Old Man Killed in CATS Light Rail Accident in North Charlotte

A 32-year-old man has died after being struck by a CATS light rail train in north Charlotte, marking another fatal incident on the city’s transit system.

According to city officials, the crash occurred Saturday, April 18, around 5:47 p.m. at North Tryon Street and Orr Road. Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to reports of a pedestrian being hit by a CATS LYNX Blue Line train.

When officers arrived, they found Carlos Jamel Michilena, 32, unresponsive near the tracks. Medic transported him to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Investigators say Michilena was in the intersection and walked in front of the train as it entered the crossing.

He died the following morning, Sunday, April 19, at approximately 7:41 a.m.
