This past weekend a team of divers, Native American leaders, and volunteers collaborated to recover an ultra-rare 1,000-year-old Waccamaw Indian dug-out canoe from the bottom of Lake Waccamaw near Wilmington, NC.

The 28 feet long vessel was discovered unexpectedly by three teenagers swimming in the lake during the summer of 2021.

Here’s a video showing the recovery process.

The canoe will now be taken to a lab in Greenville to be further studied and preserved.
