Pomegranate Trees

One rate tree many garden hobbyists leave out of their planting plans is pomegranate trees. Known by its botanical name (Punica Granatum), pomegranates are delicious fruits best cultivated in warm climate regions. This tree is very easy to maintain and is largely immune to diseases and pest invasion. Their red fruits have leather rinds and sweet seeds enriched with anti-oxidants.

Pomegranate trees come in different sizes, depending on their species. Some can be as small as 3ft and others as tall as 30ft, but their fruits’ quality is largely the same. Their barks have dark red and brown colors with spiked branches to keep invaders away m this fruit has many health benefits that will keep you and your family healthy all year round. Being a drought-tolerant tree, you should consider planting one or a few on your garden; in 2-3 years, they will start bearing fruits.

Papaya

Papaya is another exotic fruit best cultivated in USDA zones 9 and 10. Popular called pawpaw; the Papaya name is culled from its botanical name (Carica Papaya). Papaya is a native tree from Central America known to bear several seeds over its lifetime. This tropical and subtropical tree has spread to other parts of the world, and to date, there are dozens of Papaya trees in many regions worldwide.

An average papaya tree can grow as tall as 30ft at full maturity, with its leaves expanding to over 3ft. Furthermore, papaya has different types, namely the male, female and bisexual species. The male specie does not produce fruits, only the female and bisexual species. Species also influence size and shape; some fruits are medium round or oblong round, and there are large round fruits too. Papaya fruits are mostly yellow inside, but some are orange or red in color.

To grow papaya, you will have to extract the seed from the ripe fruit first, then plant several seeds in different pots to ensure that at least one germinates. When exposed to sunlight, seedlings may emerge in two weeks or less, depending on their growth cycles, and within 5-6 months, flowers will begin to emerge.

Meyer Lemon

You probably have never heard of Meyer Lemon or seen a Meyer tree before. Those who have tasted the fruit will confirm the richness and amazing taste of this exotic fruit. Meyer lemons are hybrid fruits being partly mandarin orange and partly lemon. The combination of two citrus plants gives it a much sweeter taste.

One reason why you probably may not see them in grocery shops is because they are not grown commercially, but ii should consider planting them in your garden. The tree starts bearing fruit after two years and can grow in tight spaces, which makes it a space-friendly tree. Even if you plant it indoors, like on your patio, it will still yield fruit. The first Meyer Lemon Trees were planted in China sometime in 1908, but they were diseased and infected other citrus trees in the region. The same thing happened in California and threatened the citrus industry there.

Then in 1975, researchers at the University of California introduced a new, improved variety of the plant widely grown today. A fully mature Meyer Lemon tree can grow up to 7ft. Note that the tree will grow relative to the size of your garden pot. And when their foreskin takes the color of egg yolk with a faint orange tinge which can be used to spice your dishes due to their lovely fragrance.

Guava

Guava trees are distinct from many other trees and have been around for hundreds of years. They have yellow-tinged flesh with a touch of red and amazing tastes. This tropical fruit is best planted in cold regions and can even survive under freezing temperatures. Besides eating the fruit raw, you can use its extract to make jams and fruit juices. Guavas are rich in pectin and start bearing fruit in their second year.

The only downside to them is that they have low survival rates, so to increase your chances of success, you need to plant more than a few and tend to them assiduously until they reach full maturity.

These top four rare fruits can be planted in your garden if your climate is conducive for any of them, and within 2-3 years, you should start reaping a bountiful harvest. Which one will you start with? Tell us in the comments!
