Series of Earthquakes Rattling Small Town North of Charlotte

A series of earthquakes are now rattling a small North Carolina town between Charlotte and Raleigh.

According to the USGS, the first quake occurred at 2:19 AM this morning with a magnitude of 2.3, and the second was 3 minutes later with a magnitude of 2.2. So far the quakes have been centering around the small town of McLeansville, about 80 miles northeast of Charlotte.

Earthquakes have been increasing in frequency around the Charlotte region over the past few years. A couple years ago, we experienced the largest earthquake in over 100 years when a 5.1 magnitude quake hit Sparta, NC, and since then, dozens of aftershocks have continued to rattle our state.

According to USGS.gov, “Moderately damaging earthquakes strike the inland Carolinas every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once each year or two.”

Did you feel any of today’s quakes?
