Man Who Killed Sheriff’s Deputy After Crashing Into Bessemer City Restaurant Pleads Guilty

The man who drove his SUV into a Gaston County restaurant and 2 people, including a sheriff’s deputy, has just pleaded guilty to 2 counts of 2nd-degree murder.

The incident occurred on May 20th, 2018 when Roger Self and his family were eating at Surf and Turf Lodge on North 14th Street in Bessemer City. According to witnesses, Self suddenly got up from his table, left the restaurant, then drove his SUV directly into the front of the restaurant.

The crash resulted in the death of Roger’s daughter, Katelyn Self (a Gaston County Sherriff’s Deputy), and his daughter-in-law, Amanda Self. According to the CMPD, the incident was likely originated from a domestic dispute.

Before Roger was removed from the courtroom, he shouted to his family, “I love you, you’re my hero.”

Roger’s punishment has yet to be determined.
