How much of the conventional desire for big homes is still achievable in the largest US cities? And where do homeowners have the best chances to enjoy a spacious backyard?

According to a new study of lot and home sizes, Charlotte claims the third spot among the best cities in the country for spacious living, with generous median home and lot sizes of 1.9K and 10.6K square feet, respectively. The Queen City also scored well for family-orientated factors such as home prices, commute times and safety.

Here are some interesting findings from the study:

  • Charlotte homes have been growing to accommodate families — those built over the past 10 years have a median size of 2.3K square feet, 19% greater than the median overall figure.
  • The median lot size of Charlotte homes built over the past decade is lower at 7.3K square feet, 31% smaller than the overall median lot size for the city.
  • Generally, though, Charlotte homes offer plenty of space both indoors and outdoors. The median home in the city hovers at around 1,900 square feet, which means that it takes up about 18% of the lot.
