Charlotte Now Ranks Among America’s Deadliest Cities

According to a new survey by the Major Cities Chiefs Association, Charlotte-Mecklenburg now ranks as the 28th most deadly city in America with a murder rate of 5.6 per 100,000 residents, which is over double what it was during the same period in 2016.

We were tied with Dekalb County, GA and Houston, TX, just ahead of Oklahoma City at #31 with 5.5 per 100,000, and just behind Miami and Albuquerque, both tied for #26 with 5.7 per 100,000. The #1 most deadly city in America was St. Louis, Missouri, with a total of 29.1 murders per 100,000 residents during the first half of 2017.

The survey includes homicide figures from 62 responding metro police agencies across America between January 1 and June 30, 2017.

Charlotte saw a total of 47 homicides during the first half of 2017, compared with just 22 during the first half of 2016.
