Human skeletal remains and a duffel bag containing personal belongings were discovered in a Lancaster County field over the weekend and police are now asking for the public’s help in identifying the remains.

According to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to privately owned land off South Potter Road near Bear Creek Park around 12:45 p.m. Saturday. Investigators said the remains appeared to have been there for a long period of time.

The Coroner’s Office secured and processed the scene. Crime scene investigators also collected personal items from the nearby duffel bag.

Authorities said those belongings have already provided investigators with possible leads about the person’s identity.

The remains were taken by the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office. They will be examined by the Richland County Coroner’s Office Forensic Anthropology Department.

Forensic specialists will work to identify the person and determine the cause and manner of death.

Sheriff Barry Faile said investigators still know very little about what happened.

“We hope the examination of the remains and the personal items found nearby will lead us to the identity of this person very soon,” Faile said.

Investigators said no evidence of foul play has been discovered at this time.
