Charlotte just unveiled its first “smart city” digital kiosk, launching a 30-unit network that will offer free Wi-Fi while generating money for the city. And under the agreement, Charlotte taxpayers won’t pay for the kiosks.
The first kiosk is located along the Beatties Ford Road corridor through Charlotte’s partnership with IKE Smart City.
The interactive kiosks provide free surveillance cameras, 911 connectivity, Wi-Fi, sponsored ads, maps, and public information. Additional locations are planned around South End, SouthPark, University City and other neighborhoods.
Charlotte Will Make Money From the Kiosks
Under the 10-year contract, IKE pays to manufacture, install, operate and maintain all 30 kiosks.
Meanwhile, Charlotte receives 30% of advertising revenue and a guaranteed minimum of $8,000 annually per kiosk.
That means the complete network should generate at least $240,000 annually for the city.
IKE assumes the financial risk if advertising revenue falls short. The company must still pay Charlotte the guaranteed minimum.
IKE also covers electricity, maintenance, insurance and other operating expenses.
The Beatties Ford Road kiosk marks the beginning of the larger rollout, bringing a new combination of connectivity and city information to Charlotte neighborhoods.
