Charlotte is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country — and new data puts a precise number on what renters can get here for a $1,500 monthly budget in 2026.
The team at RentCafe.com ranked 200 U.S. cities by how much apartment space $1,500 a month gets renters — here’s what that looks like for Charlotte.
- At #86 out of 200 cities, Charlotte renters can secure 847 square feet for a $1,500 monthly budget. It’s 20% more than the national average of 703 square feet.
- That number has been remarkably stable: Charlotte’s square footage for $1,500 is essentially unchanged from last year — a +0.07% shift — at a time when roughly two-thirds of the 200 cities we analyzed are losing ground.
- For context, Charlotte’s average rent is $1,657 a month for 936 square feet — meaning a $1,500 budget already falls below the citywide market rate, but renters on this budget are getting a solid one- to two-bedroom apartment.
In North Carolina, Charlotte ranks last among the cities we analyzed for apartment space on a $1,500 budget.
- The state tells a clear story: the larger and more in-demand the city, the less $1,500 stretches. Fayetteville leads the state at #17 nationally with 1,185 square feet — a two- to three-bedroom apartment.
- Greensboro (#28, 1,076 sq. ft.) and Winston-Salem (#29, 1,075 sq. ft.) both land renters in the two-to-three-bedroom range for $1,500, with average rents well under $1,400.
- Cary comes in at 929 sq. ft. (#57), Durham at 900 sq. ft. (#67), and Raleigh at 896 sq. ft. (#69) — all in the one-to-two-bedroom range and all within 50 square feet of Charlotte.
