Controversial Billboards Installed Outside NC Military Bases With Message to Reject “Illegal Orders”

A left-wing group is now installing billboards in North Carolina to encourage our troops to “refuse unlawful orders”.

The advocacy group “Win Without War” installed the proactive sign outside Fort Bragg, directing troops to a website called NotWhatYouSignedUpFor.org. The website urges service members to use encrypted platforms such as Signal, ProtonMail, and VPNs to access its materials. The website provides links to legal resources and veteran-led groups offering “guidance on refusing illegal orders,” along with instructions on navigating military discharges and rights under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The billboards began appearing nationwide in September, starting in Washington, D.C., before expanding to Chicago, Memphis, and several locations across North Carolina. One sign near Fort Bragg, prominently placed along Skibo Road at the Bragg Boulevard overpass, reads: “Did you go airborne just to pull security for ICE?” The message directs military personnel to a website called NotWhatYouSignedUpFor.org.

Win Without War describes itself as a national network advocating for “progressive, diplomatic, and human-rights-based” foreign policy. The group says its latest campaign is a response to recent executive actions by President Donald Trump, including an August order declaring a “crime emergency” in Washington, D.C., which deployed National Guard troops into the capital.

The billboards have also drawn comparisons online to recent social-media videos published by Democratic members of Congress encouraging troops to “refuse illegal orders” issued by the Trump administration. Critics argue the signs undermine military readiness and discipline, while supporters claim they defend constitutional limits on executive power.

The campaign’s arrival in North Carolina — home to one of the nation’s largest active-duty military populations — has intensified the conversation. Fort Bragg and Camp Lejeune house tens of thousands of soldiers and Marines, making them key locations for any message aimed at shaping national defense debates.

Win Without War say they plan on putting up additional billboards across the country as their funding increases.
