South Carolina drivers will soon see a major change on their vehicles. Beginning January 1, 2026, the state will replace its familiar “While I Breathe, I Hope” license plate with a new design commemorating the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
The new plate, created by the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission, features a patriot planting the historic Moultrie flag beside the plate number. Above the design, the phrase “Where the Revolutionary War Was Won” highlights South Carolina’s pivotal role in America’s fight for independence.
This new look will become the state’s standard license plate option, replacing the current palm tree and crescent design modeled after the state flag. The South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed that the change was authorized by state legislation, which mandates a redesign every ten years.
Officials say the commemorative design honors the state’s Revolutionary War legacy and aligns with ongoing efforts to recognize South Carolina’s significant role in securing America’s freedom. It also distinguishes itself from a similar optional plate — titled “250 Year Anniversary Revolutionary War” — that has been available ahead of the official rollout.
The “In God We Trust” plate will remain available as the only other standard option that does not require an additional fee.
