A year after falling short on this stage, North Carolina outplayed Gonzaga to secure the school’s sixth national title.

The Tar Heels staged an incredible comeback after being down 35-32 at the half, and after making only 4-of-27 3-point shots.

They came out of the half-time locker room on fire, scoring the first eight points of the second half to give themselves a 40-35 lead.

Gonzaga shot just 27.6% percent in the second half, but played their hearts out even up to the last minute. In the end, UNC simply played harder, scoring the final 8 points of the game and securing their 6th national title with a final score of 71-65.

North Carolina coach Williams now joins an elite group of legendary coaches that includes John Wooden, Mike Krzyzewski, Bob Knight, Adolph Rupp and Jim Calhoun with his third national title.

“In the end, when you’re watching your kids jump around on the court, there’s no better feeling for a coach,” Williams commented after the game.

In true Tar Heel fashion, downtown Chapel Hill’s Franklin Street was flooded just moments after the final buzzer;
