U.S. Olympic Trials Happening In Charlotte This Week

charlotte white water center olympic trialsThe 2016 Olympic games are almost here, and before heading down to Rio this August, athletes will be coming to Charlotte this coming week to determine who the best kayakers and canoers in America are.

40 of the nation’s top paddlers are about to compete at the U.S. National Whitewater Center for five slots on the U.S. Olympic team.

This coming Friday and Saturday, the USWWC will host several officially sanctioned events this weekend, with team trials now open to the public. The center is expecting over 15,000 people to come out to watch this weekend, based on the last national event they hosted.

Two of the athletes competing are from right here in the Charlotte region; Michal Smolen, 22, from Gastonia, and Casey Eichfeld, 26, from Mount Holly.
