SLED is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Friday morning in Fort Mill, according to York County Sheriff Tony Breeden. The incident occurred at around 9:20 am this morning.
Deputies with the York County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call about a person who was unconscious and not breathing. When deputies arrived, they found the person inside a home, awake, and armed with a knife.
Authorities say the individual barricaded themselves in a room while holding the knife. A deputy ordered the person to drop the weapon and exit the room. Instead, officials say the person opened the door, refused commands, and charged at the deputy.
The deputy fired his weapon, killing the suspect. No deputies were physically injured during the encounter.
Per Sheriff’s Office policy, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has taken over the investigation. The deputy involved has been placed on paid administrative leave.
The incident took place on Pine Ridge Ct. in Fort Mill’s Twin Lakes Estates trailer park near the highly controversial Silfab factory.
Officials said all further details will be released by SLED once the investigation progresses.
