Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting, resulting in one person being shot and killed in Pineville Tuesday afternoon. The incident took place between the Food Lion on Johnson Road and a nearby apartment complex. Officers responded to a 911 call about a shoplifting incident at the Food Lion at around 3 pm.
An off-duty police sergeant confronted the suspect at the store, sparking a physical altercation and foot chase to a nearby apartment complex. Officials have not revealed if the suspect was armed or detailed the moments before the officer discharged their weapon.
The officer, whose identity remains undisclosed, is on administrative leave pending the investigation’s outcome.
Both police departments held a brief news conference at 6 p.m. Tuesday but declined questions, citing the early stage of the investigation.

The NC SBI and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney are assisting Pineville Police in the ongoing investigation. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses.
