NCDOT Shutting Down I-77 In Huntersville To Build $30.8 Million “Diverging Diamond” Interchange

NCDOT has just announced they will be closing a major portion of I-77 South in Huntersville later this month to start working on an innovative $30.8 million “Diverging Diamond Double-Crossover” interchange.

The section near Gilead Road (exit 23) will be shut from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. on Sept. 7th through the 9th.

All southbound lanes around the exit, including the toll lanes, will be closed. Drivers will be rerouted down a Gilead Road detour during the closure.

The innovative diverging diamond layout allows bidirectional traffic to briefly shift to the road’s left side, facilitating smoother interstate ingress. The changes will also include a new bridge for eastbound traffic over I-77, while the pre-existing bridge will be for drivers heading west.
