Just days after winter weather swept through North Carolina, NC forestry officials are warning of heightened wildfire risks statewide.
The North Carolina Forest Service has reported that fire danger will expand eastward across the state over the coming week.
In spite of the recent snowfall, many western counties are now under high fire danger.
Factors Contributing to Fire Risks:
- Uneven Storm Impact: Some regions received minimal precipitation during the winter storm.
- Ongoing Drought: Persistent dry conditions have dried out organic soil, increasing wildfire potential.
- Dry Fuels: Small dead fuels, like grass and pine needles, dry quickly in persistent cold air.
- Wind and Debris: Winds and drying storm debris from Hurricane Helene further elevate risks.
Residents are urged to consult county rangers before any outdoor burning and follow safe practices. State forestry offices remain available for guidance across North Carolina.
