Nancy Mace Targets Ralph Norman’s Turf with First Major Gubernatorial Event in Rock Hill

US Rep. Nancy Mace will hold a town hall in downtown Rock Hill on Monday evening, marking her first major public event since officially launching her campaign for South Carolina governor.

The gathering will be held at Hoppin’ Rock Hill, 110 Southern St., at 6 p.m. and comes just one week after Mace announced her candidacy, first on social media and later during a formal campaign launch at The Citadel, her alma mater.

Monday’s event carries added political weight as it takes place in the hometown of fellow gubernatorial contender and fellow US Rep. Ralph Norman.

Norman, who represents the district hosting Silfab Solar’s controversial Fort Mill project, has faced growing criticism from Fort Mill and Rock Hill residents over his ties to the project.

Norman is co-founder of the Congressional Solar Caucus and ranks as the 20th wealthiest member of Congress, with extensive commercial real estate holdings in the region through the Warren Norman Company. Last May, Silfab’s heavy industrial Fort Mill cell factory received a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Energy Technologies Office. Federal campaign finance records show Norman’s campaign has received contributions from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), the lobbying group representing Canadian-based Silfab Solar.

Mace, positioning herself as an anti-corruption alternative to Norman, has outlined a platform that includes eliminating the state income tax, overhauling the criminal justice system, expanding school choice and vocational education, pursuing judicial reform, and diversifying South Carolina’s energy portfolio.

The Republican primary field is already crowded, with Attorney General Alan Wilson, Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, and state Rep. Josh Kimbrell also in the race. Former President Donald Trump has yet to endorse a candidate.

With political stakes high and the campaign season intensifying, Monday’s town hall will offer voters a closer look at Mace’s gubernatorial vision and her contrasts with opponents.
